On The RhodesThe term legendary is particularly over-used when referring to vintage musical equipment. However, no one would deny that the Fender Rhodes Electric Piano deserves not only legendary status but also that of being one of the most coveted and influential keyboard instruments of the last 35 years. The inventor, Harold Rhodes, first began making musical instruments in the 1940s, initially developing a type of electric xylophone which was, oddly enough, constructed from bits of aluminium tubing salvaged from B17 bombers. In the early 1960s and in conjunction with Leo Fender, Harold Rhodes developed the Fender Rhodes Piano Bass, which was based around a small 32 note keyboard which utilised the principal of striking aluminium tubes or tines to create the distinctive sound. A short while later, in 1965, the first full size Fender Rhodes was born - the Suitcase 88. Although over the years various model names have come and gone, one thing has remained constant throughout all of the Rhodes guises, its unmistakable sound. Used by artists from Chick Corea to Portishead and Steely Dan to Stevie Wonder, the Fender Rhodes has truly helped shape the last 30 years of modern music. The PlayersArden Hart is a genuinely gifted musician. Unbelievable is the phrase often used to describe his ability. bx_hybrid was designed to map any & all EQ features of the AVID / Digidesign ICON center section EQ knobs! This means 7-band EQ incl. Lo- and Hi-Pass filters with various adjustable filter orders (up to 5th order – 30dB/octave), Lo- and Hi-Shelving EQs, Peak filters, Notch-filters (with adjustable Q!), and another Brainworx invention:
The JOYSTICK EQs – BASS- & PRESENCE SHIFTER EQs (taken from bx_digital) with shiftable center-frequencies (per common request). When used with Digidesign ICON controllers these Shifter EQs can be mapped to and controlled by the Surround Panners of the ICON, making this EQ an 11-band EQ with truly unique ease-of-use! There is nothing like the Bass Shift for tweaking bass-drums, and do try the Presence Shift for accoustic guitars. A sophisticated Auto Solo Mode will solo single frequency bands and tweak Q controls - upon mouse-click or when used with the touch sensitive EQ knobs of the ICON!
With internal Double Precision calculating these EQs work with double resolution in 44 and 48kHz sessions, this way avoiding Nyquist frequency problems and allowing for digital EQing up to 26 kHz in low res sessions.
bx_shredspread is a stereo processor to be used on any stereo guitar subgroup or stereo guitar channels. bx_shredspread’ s main purpose is to make sure your stereo (“doubled”) guitar signals sound “wide and phatt” - as easy and fast as possible.
Stereo-guitars that have been created by recording several mono tracks (aka “doubled” guitars) will benefit best from the auto-correcting features and the "SHRED-filter", but bx_shredspread will work on conventional stereo guitar sounds and stereo samples as well, of course.
Although mainly created for guitars bx_shredspread may also be used on keyboard groups, organs, choirs, etc.
bx_shredspread is a tool to control panning, stereo width and the “tone” of your stereo guitar tracks / groups. It automatically avoids typical phase problems that can occur when using M/S technology via some sophisticated algorithms for stereo width, EQ and pan.
bx_XL is a low latency M/S mastering limiter. Its main purpose is to help you get your mixes loud while keeping them clear (undistorted). “As loud” as any major label production and less “squashed” than many of them.
While we developed the bx_XL processor we found ourself wondering several times why it seems to be a “must have” in the audio-world today to “limit” your mixes to the extreme. While you can do so with bx_XL we truly believe that there is a certain stage at which you should STOP to squash your mixes more and more to eventually achieve “huge loudness” or volume.
From a certain level on we at BX feel that too much loudness is a true limitation for your music. Limitation in dynamics, in power and strength... Certain music styles seem to require that squashed sound and “loud first impression”, but you might achieve a bigger and longer lasting impact with a powerful mix that is loud indeed... but not dead yet. Please do keep this in mind when cranking up your mixes.
bx_XL internally converts stereo signals into M (mid / sum) and S (side / difference) signals and splits the M channel into 2 bands (hi & lo). This way you can limit and level 3 individual channels to increase loudness and improve clarity of stereo mixes drastically – with much less distortion artifacts and while keeping much more “punch” than any other limiter system.
Via the Crossover Frequency slider the “MidLo” channel can be used to separate the bass drum and limit it different than the rest of your mid signal easily! This is great for all kinds of dance, rap, techno and rock music!
After the 3 channels of bx_XL have been mixed back together to a regular L/R stereo signal internally the signal runs through an additional (fourth!) final standard brickwall peak stop limiter which offers an adjustable master out level.
bx_XL also has a 3 band “psycho-acoustic” loudness maximizer built-in and offers 4 automatable settings with copy & paste functionality. All these features combined with 32 steps of Undo / Redo and various detailed Level meters make for a sophisticated dynamics & loudness control system second to none.
We recommend bx_XL to be used as the final plugin on the stereo master buss for mixing and mastering purposes and it can work great on any stereo bus / stereo sub group as well.
bx_XL is based upon the M/S technology taken from our “modern classic” M/S EQ bx_digital. We developed this hi-end analogue EQ 2006/2007 and we have offered a plug-in emulation of this EQ ever since. How to install the update
1. Download the Orchestral Brass Classic (OBC) 1.2 updater from either the ProjectSAM website or the Native Instruments Service Center application.
2. Make sure you have a working installation of OBC 1.0, 1.1 or 1.11 on your computer.
3. Unzip the downloaded updater and browse into the OS_X or Win folder, depending on your computer platform.
4. Start the Native Content Updater program.
5. The updater will ask you for the .NCU file. Browse into the unzipped update folder, select the
OBC_Update.ncu file and confirm.
6. The updater will confirm that it has found the correct library to update. Confirm.
7. The updater will install the update and close itself.
8. Please note that there is no confirmation or finish screen.
Note: the “library” version field in the OBC Instrument Options in Kontakt is no longer used. This is why this field may still show an older library version number after updating to 1.2. If you want to make sure that the 1.2 update was successfully installed, check the date of the 6 Multis. Their date should be 2 December 2010.

Effects version

Processing drums, vocals, or any other audio source through the filters, envelopes, ring modulator and along with the multiple modulation choices the impOSCar2 affords, is guaranteed to unlock its serious sonic potential. For certain hosts, including Logic, there’s also a side-chained MIDI Controlled Effect available enabling you to even route audio through the arpeggiator.
Comprehensive Arpeggiator
And on the subject of the Arpeggiator, impOSCar2 now contains a vastly improved Arpeggiator which includes a Pitch/Play mode for pitch or note orders, together with -1, +1 & +2 Octave Shift selection as well as the usual Up, Down, Up & Down and Random note and Octave modes.
Multiple Unision Modes
However, one of the biggest sonic enhancements on impOSCar2, and one we could not have envisaged even a few short years ago, is Unison control. Simply put, the entire Unison Section helps take the classic OSCar sound to awe inspiring new heights!
Utilising the various Mono and Poly Unison modes allows the creation of anything from screaming-bastard Unison Leads right up to mammoth 8 Voice Poly Unison stacks with 16 note polyphony. Additionally enhancing the sonic possibilities the unison detune knob takes unison voice tuning from subtle to insane for the phatest sound ever to come out of a virtual synth. We didn’t stop there either. A Unison Spread knob enables each unison voice to be spread across the stereo spectrum for bombastically spacious chords or leads. This, in conjunction with five Pan Modes and individual Note Spread, means impOSCar2 can be tailored to fit within a mix regardless of whether the remit is a tightly focussed patch or a super-spacious texture across a vast stereo spectrum. Finally in the Unison Section there’s the ability to apply different glide times to each unison voice when using Portamento or Glissando – a wonderful feature borrowed from the classic OB-8.
Chord Memory
Another classic OB-8 feature rears its head by way of the Chord Memory button. Play a chord, memorise it and then transpose that chord across the keys. An additional feature of this mode is the ability to play extra individual notes to supplement the notes within the triggered chord. And if you’re fortunate enough to have a keyboard that transmits polyphonic aftertouch you can inject expression into these notes while the chord retains its unique character.
Polyphonic and channel aftertouch
Of course impOSCar2 receives both polyphonic and channel aftertouch and this, combined with the existing Velocity Response Controls, means that impOSCar2 is a vastly more expressive instrument than before.
Patch library
ImpOSCar2 is also supplied with a huge Patch Library that will make you want to play and experiment to the hilt. And while we’re on the subject of Patch Libraries, impOSCar2 contains a small mountain of patches created by OSCar & impOSCar luminaries including; Darren Price & Rick Smith (Underworld), I Monster, Paul Hartnol (Orbital), Billy Currie (Ultravox) and many more.
The original impOSCar patch library is also included together with the Billy Currie Signature Sounds. Both libraries have been enhanced to take advantage of the additional features such as aftertouch and extra LFO routing.
Patch Management
Another of the more popular user requests, the new impOSCar2 Patch Management system is a huge improvement over its predecessor. Now, via a highly intuitive interface you can load banks and patches, import and convert original impOSCar aupresets, fxbs and fxps before outputting them to impOSCar2 specific aupresets, fxbs and fxps. Similarly, if you want to change your impOSCar2 patch formats for use within a specific host such as Logic you can easily convert all fxbs and fxps to aupresets and vice versa. The enhanced Patch Browser also recognizes tfx, aupreset, fxb and fxp files and allows instant loading without the need for conversion.
There is also a dedicated Program Change window within the new Patch Management browser, which makes setting up live performances quick and easy. Finally, in this section, there are four Macro Memory buttons to which you can assign your favourite patches for speedy recall.
Three User Interface Sizes
Again, this is another area where we listened to user-feedback and put our expertise to work. impOSCar2 now comes with 840, 1024 & 1600 pixel width versions.
Synthesis features
With regards synthesis features, impOSCar already afforded both additive and subtractive synthesis types but as you would expect we’ve made a plethora of additions that should keep even the most ardent synth programmer happy.
In the Oscillator section both oscillators now have independent pulse width control, for more control over the PWM and Rectangle Waveforms.
Ring modulation
Residing in the Mix Section, is a two-mode ring modulator which now helps you create a vast array of new textures from musical to subtle and to abstract and beyond.
Additional LFO modes
A completely new Aux Mod section has been grafted onto the instrument and offers destinations including Oscillator 2 Pitch, Osc1 Pulse Width, Osc2 Pulse Width, Osc1&2 Pulse Width, Filter Separation, Filter Resonance (Q), Oscillator Mix and Noise Mix. And when combined with LFO1 and/or the freshly added LFO2 and LFO Balance Controls, again, the net result is anything from complex modulated timbres to ever shifting organic sounding textures.
Finally, with regards the LFOs, in accordance with many user requests, new Sync options have been added so that slower synched modulations can be achieved with ease.

On The RhodesThe term legendary is particularly over-used when referring to vintage musical equipment. However, no one would deny that the Fender Rhodes Electric Piano deserves not only legendary status but also that of being one of the most coveted and influential keyboard instruments of the last 35 years. The inventor, Harold Rhodes, first began making musical instruments in the 1940s, initially developing a type of electric xylophone which was, oddly enough, constructed from bits of aluminium tubing salvaged from B17 bombers. In the early 1960s and in conjunction with Leo Fender, Harold Rhodes developed the Fender Rhodes Piano Bass, which was based around a small 32 note keyboard which utilised the principal of striking aluminium tubes or tines to create the distinctive sound. A short while later, in 1965, the first full size Fender Rhodes was born - the Suitcase 88. Although over the years various model names have come and gone, one thing has remained constant throughout all of the Rhodes guises, its unmistakable sound. Used by artists from Chick Corea to Portishead and Steely Dan to Stevie Wonder, the Fender Rhodes has truly helped shape the last 30 years of modern music. The PlayersArden Hart is a genuinely gifted musician. Unbelievable is the phrase often used to describe his ability. bx_XL is a low latency M/S mastering limiter. Its main purpose is to help you get your mixes loud while keeping them clear (undistorted). “As loud” as any major label production and less “squashed” than many of them.
While we developed the bx_XL processor we found ourself wondering several times why it seems to be a “must have” in the audio-world today to “limit” your mixes to the extreme. While you can do so with bx_XL we truly believe that there is a certain stage at which you should STOP to squash your mixes more and more to eventually achieve “huge loudness” or volume.
From a certain level on we at BX feel that too much loudness is a true limitation for your music. Limitation in dynamics, in power and strength... Certain music styles seem to require that squashed sound and “loud first impression”, but you might achieve a bigger and longer lasting impact with a powerful mix that is loud indeed... but not dead yet. Please do keep this in mind when cranking up your mixes.
bx_XL internally converts stereo signals into M (mid / sum) and S (side / difference) signals and splits the M channel into 2 bands (hi & lo). This way you can limit and level 3 individual channels to increase loudness and improve clarity of stereo mixes drastically – with much less distortion artifacts and while keeping much more “punch” than any other limiter system.
Via the Crossover Frequency slider the “MidLo” channel can be used to separate the bass drum and limit it different than the rest of your mid signal easily! This is great for all kinds of dance, rap, techno and rock music!
After the 3 channels of bx_XL have been mixed back together to a regular L/R stereo signal internally the signal runs through an additional (fourth!) final standard brickwall peak stop limiter which offers an adjustable master out level.
bx_XL also has a 3 band “psycho-acoustic” loudness maximizer built-in and offers 4 automatable settings with copy & paste functionality. All these features combined with 32 steps of Undo / Redo and various detailed Level meters make for a sophisticated dynamics & loudness control system second to none.
We recommend bx_XL to be used as the final plugin on the stereo master buss for mixing and mastering purposes and it can work great on any stereo bus / stereo sub group as well.
bx_XL is based upon the M/S technology taken from our “modern classic” M/S EQ bx_digital. We developed this hi-end analogue EQ 2006/2007 and we have offered a plug-in emulation of this EQ ever since. Engineers and magazines around the globe rave about bx_digital so we decided to develop a limiter that “teams up” perfectly with our EQ in mastering situations.

How to install the update
1. Download the Orchestral Brass Classic (OBC) 1.2 updater from either the ProjectSAM website or the Native Instruments Service Center application.
2. Make sure you have a working installation of OBC 1.0, 1.1 or 1.11 on your computer.
3. Unzip the downloaded updater and browse into the OS_X or Win folder, depending on your computer platform.
4. Start the Native Content Updater program.
5. The updater will ask you for the .NCU file. Browse into the unzipped update folder, select the
OBC_Update.ncu file and confirm.
6. The updater will confirm that it has found the correct library to update. Confirm.
7. The updater will install the update and close itself.
8. Please note that there is no confirmation or finish screen.
Note: the “library” version field in the OBC Instrument Options in Kontakt is no longer used. This is why this field may still show an older library version number after updating to 1.2. If you want to make sure that the 1.2 update was successfully installed, check the date of the 6 Multis. Their date should be 2 December 2010.

Effects version

Comprehensive Arpeggiator
And on the subject of the Arpeggiator, impOSCar2 now contains a vastly improved Arpeggiator which includes a Pitch/Play mode for pitch or note orders, together with -1, +1 & +2 Octave Shift selection as well as the usual Up, Down, Up & Down and Random note and Octave modes.
Multiple Unision Modes
However, one of the biggest sonic enhancements on impOSCar2, and one we could not have envisaged even a few short years ago, is Unison control. Simply put, the entire Unison Section helps take the classic OSCar sound to awe inspiring new heights!
Utilising the various Mono and Poly Unison modes allows the creation of anything from screaming-bastard Unison Leads right up to mammoth 8 Voice Poly Unison stacks with 16 note polyphony. Additionally enhancing the sonic possibilities the unison detune knob takes unison voice tuning from subtle to insane for the phatest sound ever to come out of a virtual synth. We didn’t stop there either. A Unison Spread knob enables each unison voice to be spread across the stereo spectrum for bombastically spacious chords or leads. This, in conjunction with five Pan Modes and individual Note Spread, means impOSCar2 can be tailored to fit within a mix regardless of whether the remit is a tightly focussed patch or a super-spacious texture across a vast stereo spectrum. Finally in the Unison Section there’s the ability to apply different glide times to each unison voice when using Portamento or Glissando – a wonderful feature borrowed from the classic OB-8.
Chord Memory
Another classic OB-8 feature rears its head by way of the Chord Memory button. Play a chord, memorise it and then transpose that chord across the keys. An additional feature of this mode is the ability to play extra individual notes to supplement the notes within the triggered chord. And if you’re fortunate enough to have a keyboard that transmits polyphonic aftertouch you can inject expression into these notes while the chord retains its unique character.
Polyphonic and channel aftertouch
Of course impOSCar2 receives both polyphonic and channel aftertouch and this, combined with the existing Velocity Response Controls, means that impOSCar2 is a vastly more expressive instrument than before.
Patch library
ImpOSCar2 is also supplied with a huge Patch Library that will make you want to play and experiment to the hilt. And while we’re on the subject of Patch Libraries, impOSCar2 contains a small mountain of patches created by OSCar & impOSCar luminaries including; Darren Price & Rick Smith (Underworld), I Monster, Paul Hartnol (Orbital), Billy Currie (Ultravox) and many more.
The original impOSCar patch library is also included together with the Billy Currie Signature Sounds. Both libraries have been enhanced to take advantage of the additional features such as aftertouch and extra LFO routing.
Patch Management
Another of the more popular user requests, the new impOSCar2 Patch Management system is a huge improvement over its predecessor. Now, via a highly intuitive interface you can load banks and patches, import and convert original impOSCar aupresets, fxbs and fxps before outputting them to impOSCar2 specific aupresets, fxbs and fxps. Similarly, if you want to change your impOSCar2 patch formats for use within a specific host such as Logic you can easily convert all fxbs and fxps to aupresets and vice versa. The enhanced Patch Browser also recognizes tfx, aupreset, fxb and fxp files and allows instant loading without the need for conversion.
There is also a dedicated Program Change window within the new Patch Management browser, which makes setting up live performances quick and easy. Finally, in this section, there are four Macro Memory buttons to which you can assign your favourite patches for speedy recall.
Three User Interface Sizes
Again, this is another area where we listened to user-feedback and put our expertise to work. impOSCar2 now comes with 840, 1024 & 1600 pixel width versions.
Synthesis features
With regards synthesis features, impOSCar already afforded both additive and subtractive synthesis types but as you would expect we’ve made a plethora of additions that should keep even the most ardent synth programmer happy.
In the Oscillator section both oscillators now have independent pulse width control, for more control over the PWM and Rectangle Waveforms.
Ring modulation
Residing in the Mix Section, is a two-mode ring modulator which now helps you create a vast array of new textures from musical to subtle and to abstract and beyond.
Additional LFO modes
A completely new Aux Mod section has been grafted onto the instrument and offers destinations including Oscillator 2 Pitch, Osc1 Pulse Width, Osc2 Pulse Width, Osc1&2 Pulse Width, Filter Separation, Filter Resonance (Q), Oscillator Mix and Noise Mix. And when combined with LFO1 and/or the freshly added LFO2 and LFO Balance Controls, again, the net result is anything from complex modulated timbres to ever shifting organic sounding textures.
Finally, with regards the LFOs, in accordance with many user requests, new Sync options have been added so that slower synched modulations can be achieved with ease.
