How long do you leave your computer on for?

edited March 2011 in Tech & Games
During the day, I'll often leave my machine up and running so that I can just come back to it much easier later on. During this time I'll probably be running a defrag or doing something else worthwhile, like downloading a large file.

Some people don't like leaving their shit running all day and night though.

You?

Typically leave my destop running 24/7 excluding thunderstorms, or the need to switch to another OS.

On the other hand my gal's laptop I'm super paranoid about and only run it/plug it in when needed.

However long it takes for an issue requiring a restart.

I only turn off my system when my forehead accidentally hits the power button on my laptop.

Its good to know that I have sufficient cooling so that I could run this shit for weeks on end if I wanted to without it getting hot or overheating at all. I know a guy who thinks that just because his laptop is blowing out hot air, he needs to turn it off for a while

It just means that his fans are doing their job, haha.

Turn mine off every night. You'll pick up that habit too when you start paying your own power bills.

Until the power goes out. I try to run it 24/7 but it automatically shutdown at:
    9 Am
    2 Pm
    11 Pm
^Above are the regular rolling blackout timings.

Have you ever given any thought to immigrating to the west? You seem like a really bright cookie who could go far in an area with a decent economy.

Hmm, seeing as my HDD has been on for 8137 hours I think it's safe to say I leave my laptop on.

I leave mine on during the day, and turn it off when I go to sleep as the fans are a bit loud. I do sometimes leave it on, but the longest was only about 3 days or so.

If I'm in the same room as my laptop and I'm not sleeping, it's running (and usually playing music). It goes into hybrid sleep after 15 minutes when I'm gone (because I turn my music off) and it gets hibernated every night. Reboots are only for when it needs one to keep running properly or because of updates etc.

Right now my laptop stays off because I left the charger... somewhere I don't know. When I have the charger though it stays on constantly or until it overheats. I need to get a stand and new charger. :(

I do wonder if my laptop would still be on or if it would just overheat and die..
I really need to reapply the thermal paste etc. but I really cannot be arsed mainly as it's a HP and it's the biggest ballache in the world taking it to bits my old dell was brilliant (and still runs) you just undid about 12 screws and you could get at the whole thing.

On when I'm in. Standby when I'm not at my desk. Off when I'm out/sleeping.

Any outstanding tasks (backing up, video conversion) I will leave it on for but set it to shutdown once they're finished, if I'm leaving/sleeping.

On a rare occasion I leave it switched on in case I need to log in from somewhere else. But I never really need to do this; I carry important files on my memory stick/phone.

    Gotta' pay demz bills, yo.

Turn it off when I go to bed, when I go out or when I know I'm not gonna use it for a while. Wouldn't want my cat walking around on my keyboard downloading illegal pr0n.

I leave my desktop running 24/7 unless I'm going to be gone for a few days. Whenever I'm away for a few hours or asleep I disconnect from the internet and turn off my monitor.
