If your not going to read anything else in this thread do yourself a favour and read Slaughterhouse 5. War is far from the only subject in that book though...The musings on time are great. Trippy as fuck as well.
It beats the shit out of World War Z anyway. Although that book was a good read purely because I'm a huge fan of zombies...Slaughterhouse has so much more to it.

Might be a bit too historical for your tastes but I recommend the Flashman series of books. Set during the Victorian era across the British Empire and the war scenes are very well written.
