How to Wardrive

What is Wardriving?

Wardriving is awesome, to put it simply. It involves driving around town scanning for available wireless networks, eventually connecting to them with a laptop computer, smartphone or other internet-enabled device. This can be very beneficial to those who do not have an internet connection at home, or maybe you’re looking for a little extra anonymity. The common uses of Wardriving are as follows;

  • Free Internet Use.
  • Downloading Files (music, video, documents).
  • Having increased anonymity – Remember, using someone else’s connection will assign you with their IP address and information.
  • General Internet Surfing.
  • Network Sniffing – obtaining account credentials if you’re badass.

If you’re looking for more information on Wardriving, you might as well have a read through the Wikipedia page.

How to Wardrive

Before you begin Wardriving, you are going to need the following things;

  • A laptop computer with a Wireless Network Card installed.
  • Netstumber (Windows)
  • Kismet (Linux)
  • Kismac (Mac)
  • Wireless antenna (Optional, but greatly increases wardriving results).
  • MAC Address Spoofer (Also optional, but provides an increases level of anonymity. MAC filtering might be in place on a WiFi network as well, which is where this would come in handy. Try SMAC for Windows and macchanger for Linux. I’m unsure of a Mac version.

Make sure you get to learn the ins and outs of the software which you have just downloaded. Each tool has it’s own help documentation which is listed on it’s website, so have a read through to make sure you understand it all. I recommend trying it out on your own network, or even a friend’s one first.

Next, set up your vehicle with the equipment. You can sit your laptop wherever you want. If you have a wireless antenna attached, put it on the roof of the car.

Finally, start Wardriving! Drive around town stumbling for networks, and remember the best spots for WiFi activity so that you can return at a later date. Now you can use the Internet for free, download music from someone else’s connection, or do whatever the hell you want. Just keep in mind that it’s illegal to use someone’s network without their permission, so make sure that you don’t get caught.
