Migraine med (Fioricet) gives benzo-type feelings

I got prescribed this the other day for migraines. It's a combination of butalbital (a barbiturate, 50 mg), acetaminophen (325 mg), and caffeine (40 mg). I have never tried barbituates before. Weighing 100 lbs, one Fioricet gives me a relaxed sedated feeling, mild numbness & a mild euphoria. As odd as it sounds, I feel clearheaded but my judgment is slightly impaired. It doesn't make me sleepy like benzos b/c of the caffeine in it so I'm actually alert. I find it really enjoyable. Even though you're not supposed to mix it with alcohol I'm planning on trying one with a few sips of alcohol.

I've never tried barbs before either, but they do hit GABA receptors similarly to benzos

Yep & with this, you don't get the sleepiness like with benzos.

I just popped a Fioricet & shit hit me immediately. No waiting for it to peak like with benzos & opiates. Really, this is quite nice. Benzos make me fall asleep & opiates give me severe nausea. When I did an internet search, it seemed like many reported having an upset stomach when taking Fioricet but I haven't experienced that. That being said I've only taken it with food in my system. Taking one, the nice feeling lasts for about 3 hours.

I get cluster migraines, and TDR gave me a tip that has helped me greatly. I don't know if it will work for you but it honestly saved my life.

I get cluster migraines. I get subscribed immitrex, and I like the shots but with no medical insurance i cant afford them. About a year and a half ago I got a cluster that didn't stop for 35 days. 35 days of straight migraine. The pain would vary in intensity, but it was always there. I couldn't take it anymore. I finally went into the walk in clinic, and they freaked out because my pupil in my right eye wouldn't dilate like the other one when they shined a light in it. They told me that i needed a cat scan because they thought I had a brain tumor.

After the cat scan they found that I had a serious sinus infection. I took antibiotics, and the migraines stopped. a year after that it started again, and it didnt end for thirty days. I couldn't go to the doctors because I didn't have the money. I talked to TDR and he told me about the neti pot.

Since I have been using that thing my migraines have been cut down to about 1/4 and if I feel one coming on The chance of aborting it, or knocking down the severity is about 95% if I can get to the neti pot in time.

I think the sinus infections trigger my migraines, because strong odors can usually trigger them. I don't know if this can help you, but it only costs like 12 bucks for a kit. the bottle will last a few months and you can get refill packets. Its worth a shot because if you suffer from migraines you would give your left nut to do anything to stop them, and for 12 bucks its worth a try.

And what would that tip be, exactly? I get migraines all the fucking time, it's horrible. Nothing gets rid of them except from REM sleep, so when I get them after waking up in the morning, you can tell how pissed off I get

Yeah when I get mine they area usually "alarm clock" migraines, so I can sympathize with you. Its the worst feeling in the world, and worrying about when the next one is going to show up sucks as much.

Not sinus related. My doctor originally thought it was but my CT scan showed my sinuses are clear. The first script I was given was Zolmitpiptan. It did not help. So, my doc gave me a script for Fioricet & I'm trying it out. My husband thinks something has to be causing these headaches. I went over the side effects for my other scripts & my asthma meds have a side effect of headaches. I stopped taking the Advair & the headaches are still happening. Not sure what's causing them. I feel like my doctor should be doing tests to find out what is causing them & what not, rather than shove scripts at me.

I totally understand where you are coming form. They don't want to figure out why you have headaches. If they do then Big Pharm wont get the money on the drugs. Its a shame. Im sure you have heard this before, but you should keep a journal. something might come up that you never noticed before. Anything helps , and the doctors dont care. They know you will be back next month for a new script, and the scary thing is that who knows what the hell the side effects of the drugs are.

They started me on Duract way back when I first got diagnosed. One time I went to get my script filled and the pharmacist told me I couldn't have it. I asked why, and she said the medication has been pulled off the market because its causing liver failure..

Yeah, I need to start a journal, it's just so time consuming. I just don't think it's migraines but regular headaches that are resistant to pain relievers (Tylenol, Motrin, Advil, etc). I told my doctor that I don't have sensitivity to light or sound & she still insists it's migraines & told me there are many different types of migraines. Headaches or migraines... it's really messing my life up. I have a really hard time concentrating since my head always hurts. :(

They can even be rebound headaches, which occurs when someone overuses or misuses pain relieving drugs to treat headaches or migraines (per WedMD). Some days I would take 10 pain relievers.

When the occasional headache strikes, most of us head for the medicine cabinet or local pharmacy and take an over-the-counter pain medication, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Motrin), aspirin, or pain-relieving drugs containing caffeine. A rebound headache may be the outcome if these medications aren't taken as directed.

While over-the-counter pain-relievers are helpful in improving headache pain, they must be taken with caution because they could actually make your headaches worse if they aren't taken correctly. The overuse or misuse of pain relievers -- exceeding labeling instructions (such as taking the drug three or more days per week) or not following your doctor's advice -- can cause you to "rebound" into another headache.

When the pain medication wears off, you may experience a withdrawal reaction, prompting you to take more medication, which only leads to another headache and the desire to take more medication. And so the cycle continues until you start to suffer from chronic daily headaches with more severe headache pain and more frequent headaches.

Pain reliever overuse appears to interfere with the brain centers that regulate the flow of pain messages to the nerves, worsening headache pain.
