Brain Damage and the Death Experience?

Without delving too far into metaphysics, would the loss of most of your brain cheat you out of a proper death experience? From what I understand the brain is very active during the last few moments before you die, and the brain going batshit may be the primary consolation prize for your last moments.

If you get your brains blown out, would that mean that you are cheated a proper awareness of your own death? Or does it become semantics at that point anyway.

I wonder if you brain only becomes active because it knows it is in it's final moments?

Say someone enough opiates into your sandwich to cause you to OD, as you stopped breathing would the brain know it was dying? If not would there be no near death experience?
