a diy german dark aluminum can be made with a ball machine (forget what they call them) with shreads of aluminum foil and charcoal (made from soft wood like willow) it takes a while, a good linkl is http://www.instructables.com/id/Making-German-Dark-Aluminum-Powder-from-Foil/ there a good tutorials on that site.
and i dont know if any of the books mention this (i havent finished them all yet) but if you mix 1/4 cup rubbing alchohal with 2/3 - 3/4 water, it'll take away most of the surface tension to help things mix better , like if your misting the powder to make round stars
