I posted an ad on craigslist.com for my Mosin Nagant 91/30 w/ Scope and I got this email.

Thanks you for the response according to the description, am okay with
the price and the condition pasted on cl. I am ready to make instant
purchase. My mode of payment would be in CERTIFIED CHECK and i will
arrange for a local pick up as soon as you get the check, because that
is the only convenient means for me and due to my work frame i can not
be able to get there and i promise everything will go smoothly. I
really wish to be there to check out the item but i don't have chance
cause am very busy Man (Daves). Concerning the pick up, i will arrange
for it after you receive the payment ... Pls get back to me with below
info so that i can proceed with the payment immediately if you are
selling to me.
Name:
Address: Not P.O.BOX
City:
State:
Postal Code:
Phone Number: That i can send text
And as soon as this is provided, the payment will be overnight to you
and i will let you know when its mailed out. Thanks and i hope we
handle this in good faith while waiting to hear from you. i will add
an additional $50 so that you can hold it for me till the check reach
you.
Best Regard

Yes, yes it does sound fishy. Probably not gonna be a real certified check, or a stolen check, or a forgery. Tell him that won't work for you. Tell him to let the guy picking it up carry exact cash (it's not like he's gonna have to carry more than a couple hundred for a mosin).

Edit: The more I read it, the more I'm convinced he's setting you up. Something about the language, the writing style, I dunno what, but my instincts say he's scamming the hell out of you. Don't do it, don't play his games, even if everything seems fine and foolproof, he might change the whole scenario halfway trough, come up with a sob story asking you to let him pick it up before you cashed the check etc.

    Don't do it, man.

Languge does not add up at all, niether does the speed he needs it at. If he can wait to get the rifle from who ever is picking up, he can wait ot pick up. Why would he be asking your city anyway? Did you not post it under a city section on CL? So he allready knows your city...

I dont think anyone would add another $50. If he can get to a bank for a certified cheque, he can get cash - how much are we talking here?

I am guessing he is going to get your address and burgle you.

That email you got is the same thing as this story. I put a few ads on Craigs List for PC service and repair and 3 or 4 of these same bullshit responses. They are writing bad checks and getting people to cash them against their accounts. Then you give them the extra and get caught holding the bag when the investigations begin.

A shady POS trying to pass bad checks. Just stay away and keep your nose clean.
