Put a stop to derailment and stupidity in serious forums and threads.

I realize that totse is about free speech but this place isn't supposed to be 4chan. We have SG and HB for stupid shit but too often legit threads are being derailed with no consequence. The result is making this site look like shit. Hal the time the trolling isn't even well done. Imo something needs to be done about it. This type of shit would never fly on the original totse and we all know it. Lulz have their place but decent and intelligent discussion should be allowed without the thread turning into a shitfest of trolls and kidiots. Mods need to be allowed to do their job instead of letting anything go out of fear of losing members. I'm not butthurt I'm just tired of seeing this site trashed with absolutely nothing being done except or warnings and moving posts.

I agree but that was funny. Take it up with Dfg and Hellish. Hellish had an idea for a "serious" prefix. Perhaps that should be reconsidered along with mods being able to delete posts which don't abide. This deleting of posts would of course have to be handled with kid gloves and serious consideration.

Yeah but there shouldn't have to be any tag in forums designed for serious discussion. Take a look at this thread and tell me should be allowed.

I agree with DS on this one as the moderator of the forum that was defaced with bullshit today. I have issued an official warning to the offending party and edited the offending posts by either removing excessive graphics from the offending posts or moving any posts which contributed nothing to the topic of discussion (in other words the HB style shit) here.

I have also notified Dfg of my actions via PM so he is abreast of this latest round of defacement on Totse by we all know who.

Finally I am moving the OP and any relevant replies to Help and Suggestions
and moving the rest to HB as it will make no sense if left here and does not belong in Help and Suggestions.

meh, I thought it was a pretty decent thread. So what if someone is saying stupid shit? The people that were actually discussing the topic kept discussing in spite of it. What disrupted the conversation the most to me were all the moderator edits. I'm used to ignoring retards though, it might be more difficult for others.

It should be. This wasn't just one off topic post though which I dont mind. This was an intentional derailing of a legit thread because they disagreed with what I said. I dont give a shit if people disagree but TDR has manged to disagree with every word I've said and hasn't had to resort to posting 38 facepalms or acting like a child to do it. Negrophobe was also able to post in it with intelligence even though he is fascist and certainly not a socialist. Same with a few others in the thread Disagreement and laming is ine imo but useless span isnt.

It is not a matter of on topic as I see it. It is a matter of harming a discussion by posting garbage that adds nothing of value to the conversation. That in turn becomes a matter of harming the forum and the community in that we are still new and looking for solid contributing members.

When this type of stuff is done in the appropriate areas, such as HB, B&M, and even SG it is no big whoop. Even if it is done on a rare occasion at just the right time in a serious discussion forum it can nudge the conversation in interesting new directions. But when it is done as a demonstrated pattern of behavior over a period of time in the face of polite requests and warnings to cease and desist it then become a matter of intentional harm to the site.

Look at Z*oklet and how people just shit all over every thread with few exceptions. That is one of the big reasons they are now at 699 less active users than we are. Also when we were smaller it was not as serous. If it is not dealt with now as a community when we get another 2700 active users the problem will increase at an exponential rate.

Users who exhibit this behavior pattern as a matter of modus operandi accomplish two things.

    1. They drive of lurkers and new members who are looking for someplace to have serious discussion on a variety of topics.
    2. If allowed to go unchecked they attract other like minded selfish morons who in turn wash, rinse, and repeat.
So I the way I see it the community has a choce to make.

    1. Do we want the abomination of a 4ch/Zok hybrid?
    2. Or do we want a community that has a place for lulz and a place for serious information and discussion?
It seems like a no brainer to me but then I am just on member.

The funny thing is I do agree with DS and TDR and the others. Free speech doesn't mean you can flood threads with garbage. It just means you can share your thoughts whatever they might be in peace. What FATTY posts is mostly shit.

Hell, I got a PM by him notifying me he is deleting his one thread because a Mod was trying to keep his section in shape. I don't mind lulz but come-on now. You just can't ruin every fucking thread like this. Even if you check this thread, FATTY posts are retarded and Hab isn't far off as well.

Mods are allowed to run their section like they want, the only limitation comes from banning. But it would be nice to control idiots.

In short, I am listening and I do think we need a better way to handle idiots who try to turn serious sections into their troll pit. On a side note, if you want to have fun use HB. No one will bother you.

We need to brainstorm - get some ideas on how to deal with this shit. I agree that it's annoying to go into a serious thread to find some crap in it which isn't relevant. What can be done though?

For the sake of discussion how do you feel about a 4 point 14 day infraction for obvious off topic posting or trash posting in certain serious discussion forums? Proceeded by the standard request to stop and then warning as is the norm for Flooding, Hacking the forum, Page Stretching, Posting child porn, Posting Drug Sources, Posting harmful links, and Spammed Advertisements.

I don't believe in any of that nonsense, infractions don't work, temp bans don't work, perm bans can be avoided, the best and (certainly cliche) response is to ignore the trolls. That's it. Serious topics are going to go off topic, and may steer into another discussion of equal or greater importance (or garbage). Threads should be free and open in every forum.

A conversation migrating to various topics is one thing. Purposely posting useless content that serves no purpose other than a continued attempt on the part of the poster to derail a thread(s) is another.

How about counteracting the trolls by posting twice as many legitimate replies? That would avoid all the infraction nonsense and still make the trolls look like idiots. People can easily skim over a few nonsensical replies while reading the real ones.

That is like saying "Let's fix the crime problem by not breaking twice as many laws". Idiots don't need help looking stupid. In fact there is noting you can do to make them look like a bigger dumb ass then they do all on there own. In the big picture this type of "sticking your head in the sand" approach will only serve to compound the problem as we gain more members.

There are always going to be a certain percentage of morons in any group of people. Hell I see that first hand every year at the family reunion. The reunion is hosted by my Father's oldest surviving brother. We will call him Uncle Bob. Uncle Bob is the sort of guy who has put up with a ton of shit from various family members over the years. He is also generous to a fault and very forgiving. Not unlike the way Totse puts forth effort to allow everyone to speak their mind and enjoy "the party".

On that side of the family there are 8 surviving brothers and sisters in my Dad's generation. Add to that all of their children, grandchildren, son and daughter in laws, and even a significant number of Great Grandchildren and you get a pretty large group of around 200 people at the reunion every year.

Over the years there have been 3 family members who have been permanently uninvited due to behavior that would severely detract from the enjoyment of all. Now I am not talking about people who fucked up once, twice, thrice, or even four times. I am talking about those who have demonstrated, over a sustained period of time, that this is how they intend to behave and if you don't like it or if it ruins your enjoyment then too bad.

In any social group those types of people are weeded out to ensure the general welfare of all. In some places they are just taken outside and shot. In others rehabilitation is attempted, and in some places they are tolerated without repercussion for whatever reason (Mogadishu).

Just look around the world at places where there is no method of removing those who think only of what they get out of something and have no problem shitting on the desires of anyone else so long as they get what they want. Then tell me if you think ignoring that type of behavior is any type of solution.

The biggest problem that your suggestion would create is the example it would set for new members who have yet to join. If you want to attract ducks make yourself look like a pond.

No, you can continue to lurk but will not have access to certain sections until you reach 100 posts. Of course if that is too much work then be content with what is given to you for no effort on your part.

What many of you fail to grasp about the original Totse is this. It was started as a dial up BBS. In those days 14 year old kids did not have computers or internet connections. When Totse went WWW it pulled a lot of old school BBS guys forward with it. These guys did not create the problems that a 14 year old with WWW access will. In other words this is an entirely different animal in a whole different cage. Therefor as the beast and it's environment have changed so must certain rules which help to keep this a place worth visiting for many more years to come. It is either that or become a very JR. 4chan/b/.

All of what you said is true, but those people from the era of the dial up BBS are gone (I do not know what time you are from, so you could be an exception). The earliest totseans we have now on totse.info and zoklet registered in 2000, and anyone who claims a date prior to that is unverifiable. Almost everyone else joined between 2004-2008, and that is the time period that they remember and is the source of their nostalgia. I only speak of how the rules were for them, not the distant past.

I joined Totse around 95. I lost my computer in a nasty divorce around 97. When I got back online in 99 I had forgotten my passwords for most everything including Totse and the email address associated with the account. By the time I got around to thinking about Totse registration was closed so I forgot about it. Then, around December of 09 I stumbled across it again only find it closed so I singed up on Zoklet. There were many new faces and a couple I vaguely recalled.

The point being that Jeff Hunter ran things a certain way that was based on his collective experiences form the BBS days and early WWW years. I think one of the reasons he closed shop may have been things just changed to much in terms of users respecting a community and he said fuck it. I am sure there were many other reasons and we will never know them all. But the bottom line is this is not your "Father's" internet anymore. People have changed and so has there perception of online communities. That, along with a much younger demographic than in the 90's has created an overall environment for BB based communities. A demographic populated by more youthful members. Now couple this with the fact the today's youth has less respect for things in general than those who were 20 in 2000,those who wer 20 in 2000 had lest respect for things that those who were 20 in 1990, and those who were 20 in 1990 had less than those of us who hit that mark in 1980 or so. This is based on my observations and raising 4 kids who are currently 18, 21, 23, and 29. So I have seen up close an personal the generations I have just mentioned through all of my kids friends and my own youth. What I am trying to impart here is that just like things have changed in schools so far as added security measures an online community can not run by the same guidelines that similar communities were run by 10 or 20 years ago.

Mistakes will be made and lessons will be learned but that which does not change dies.

But if the force of change is moving towards the control of the less respectful youths which you describe, will it not be us who die for not changing to appeal to this new majority? I think that is the other side of the argument, and it all depends on what direction the admins choose to move in.

Not exactly, but I prefer a forum where serious post and derailing posts exist together. This is because that format is what I have become accustomed to but is also what I enjoy. I know that we have forums like SG and HB for off topic posts, but the truth is that most of the posts in those forums are not funny (not that there is anything wrong with that). Sometimes when I am reading a serious thread on totse or zoklet, the first few posts are serious, but then some random guy makes an off topic post the actually makes me laugh. That is a structure and quality that I admire in a forum and hope to achieve.

Everything I have said is simply my personal preference, and if Dfg and Hellish decide to choose otherwise, I will not oppose them.
