36 Members Online?

edited June 2011 in Spurious Generalities
So last night when I was in bed, I thought I'd grab the phone and have a quick check on Totse to see what was what. I scrolled down to the bottom and saw that there were 36 members online and a shit load of guests...

Did I miss something :D

That would be nice, actually. I have a feeling that if you were to have enough advertising runs with others participating in their own hometowns, then someone might notice :) Might be a good project to work on, actually.

Pretty sad to get excited over 36 members.

Not really, we rarely see that many on here at the moment. It's good to see additional people jumping on board and getting involved, and I look forward to the day when we have 36 members online constantly throughout the day :)

I look forward to the few hundred+ we used to have on &T.

I think the difference is, that &T was somewhat unique back then. Now there are quite a few clones, so the user base is distributed widely.

Yeah, you're right :( Hopefully, we can turn this into something unique while keeping the old name. We're already modernizing it which is a start, as well as using the anonymity stuff as a selling point. I wonder what else we can offer :)

Also, I just noticed we have 36 members online again! I need to start coming on totse at this time of day more often.

Well shit, totse was around for a good long while. I was on there since 2001, that's what? 9 years? It got so bad in the summer that registrations had to be turned off.

The reason myself, and everyone else found it was the text files. Then again, information that the site offered didn't seem to be so common place on the interwebs at the time.

Well, all we need to do is recreate that situation by producing modernized, up to date, fully working content. Then again, it's hard to battle with the internet monster known as Facebook, who seems to be taking up most of people's internet time. However, there are a shit load of people in the world and if we can reach out to some of them with our modern content then we might stand a chance :)

I'd appreciate a reply to that, as I'd like to know if my thoughts are going in the right direction. :)

    Yes ^

Why is it hard for you guys to grasp about the fact the original &T was around for a long fucking time, this place has been up less than a year, eventually we will have that many users, patience people.

Everyone is continuing to post content, eventually also we will have tons and tons of stuff. takes time, but we do seem to be on the right path. just a few months ago when I got here, this place was slow as fuck. Now when I log in there are three pages of new replies. I think we are doing great.

The hardest part is probably getting the first lot of users. When there's no one around, no one is motivated to contribute. After a while, things start picking up but ONLY if there's the few dedicated users in the first place. It's a hard battle but we're definitely heading in the right direction, I'd say.

Facebook isn't so much of a problem as it does nothing to garner information.

What I have noticed however, is that since I started &T in '01, forums have become much more common place, larger, and specialized. We have a large selection of sub forums here, but the user base isn't there to have it active enough to generate a lot of content and keep members active in them.

But yes, I think most people actually find this place through the Bad Ideas, and drug sections and forums. If you can attract enough people from that lot, then you might be able to start gaining a larger user base. It's not my ideal kind of people, but that's really how totse got so big. After it reaches a good size, people come here for the other content as well.

What is important is having updated content, and a larger mass of content as well. The text files should also be presented well, rather than a huge block of text. Peoples attention spans are shit these days.

No shit, but the internets has changed quite a bit since those beginning days as well. There are thousands of forums across the web that have been around for 10 years, but still have an active user base of only 10-20 people. That isn't ideal.

Hmm. Well, I'm definitely trying to focus on writing some up to date content that people will hopefully stumble across in their journeys :) I might have a shot at making some additional propaganda which focuses on selling our free speech and anonymity. Maybe that's a good selling point for people who are interested in joining up. We REALLY need something which will make us stand out from the crowd though.

    Got any more ideas?
