I played it a few months ago for the first time, and it was one of the best games I had played in a while.
It's pretty old mind, so perhaps it's better that you play System Shock 2 first (best game ever made, imho) as after you finish it, I can guarantee you will want more.
Playing this game made me wish we had the same "hacker" cyberpunk culture they had in the early 90s.

But it's gameplay is far too outdated, even for me.
I think I'll take your advice and play the second.
The gameplay is not, actually; the graphics are.
But you get used to it, it's still very atmospheric and immersive.
