How to Use Pidgin With TOR

This is a very short but sweet guide on using Pidgin with TOR for a more anonymous conversation. For even greater conversation security, I suggest reading my guide which covers encrypting MSN conversations using the OTR plugin.

Using Pidgin With TOR - Proxy Instant Messaging

See that image? Well, you’re going to have to set up your proxy settings in Pidgin as I’ve done in the screenshot. To do this, follow these simple steps;

  • Open up Pidgin, and click on the “accounts” drop-down menu.
  • Select your account, and then choose “Edit Account”.
  • Choose the “Proxy” tab, and change the drop-down to SOCKS5.
  • Enter “localhost” for your host, and 9050 as your port.

Now, restart Pidgin and make sure you’re connected to the TOR network. When you’re logged in, you’ll now be using Pidgin through TOR! For additional security, install the OTR plugin for fully encrypted conversations which I linked to at the top of this tutorial. Thanks for reading!
