If The Answer To Every Question Is ‘White Supremacy,’ Someone Is Lying To You

Earlier in March, the Daily Wire reported that “A series of shootings at Atlanta-area massage parlors left eight dead …, and after an extended manhunt, police have arrested a 21-year-old man who is believed to have confessed to the crimes.”

“Although a motive was not immediately apparent, media, including The New York Times, began to speculate that the suspect’s decision to target the massage parlors, staffed largely by Asian females, was indicative of an anti-Asian hate crime and connected the shooting spree to recent attacks on elderly individuals of Asian descent in places like San Francisco, California, and New York City (though even the most high-profile of those attacks do not appear to have been motivated specifically by racial animus),” the Daily Wire report added.

High-profile Democrats and the legacy media rallied to present this horrendous act of violence as further evidence of an epidemic of anti-Asian hatred, with the specific accusation that such bigotry is being uniquely promoted by white supremacists. The Washington Post reported that “Biden, Harris denounce attacks on Asian Americans,” while CNN wrote, “White supremacy and hate are haunting Asian Americans.”

“Many Asian Americans feel exposed by a torrent of dangerous and racially motivated rhetoric by national figures on a cultural crusade. Most prominently that includes ex-President Donald Trump, who presided over four years of rising racial tensions and often used division as a tool of personal power,” Stephen Collinson wrote for CNN.

However, this continued assertion that every form of hatred committed against Asian Americans is unique to Trump-loving “white supremacists” stands in direct opposition to available data.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice in 2018, there were 182,230 attacks against Asian people. Every race except for Asians was most likely to be victimized by someone of their own race. Asians, however, were most likely to be victimized by a black person. 27.5% of attacks against Asian people were committed by black people, compared to 24.1% by white people and 24.1% by Asian people. Just 7.0% of these attacks were committed by Hispanic people.

Representing 13.4% of the U.S. population, black people are vastly overrepresented among perpetrators of violent acts against Asian Americans, making the “blame white supremacy” line ever more challenging for the opportunistic Left.

What makes matters “worse” for the Left is that several attacks against Asian Americans have been shared widely on social media, further contradicting their claim that anti-Asian violence is unique to white Americans. For example, security cameras recorded an attack committed in New York, in which a 65-year-old Asian woman was brutally beaten in the street, reportedly by the later-identified and arrested Brandon Elliot. Elliot is black.

By ideological necessity, this has driven the Left to amend their strategy:

If the perpetrator is white, then they are guilty of their crime as an individual. However, if the perpetrator is not white, then they are simply the victim of a white “system,” meaning that the “white system” is guilty of the crime.

For example, Eugene Gu tweeted “Black on Asian crimes only occur because of our system of white supremacy that strips African Americans of their economic opportunities while taking respect and dignity away from Asian Americans. Also, white people in power are experts at dividing and conquering to stay in power.”

The same logic was applied by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, arguing that the migrant crisis which continues to unfold at the border between the United States and Mexico is not the fault of those in power — as she claimed when Trump was in office — but that external factors were to blame, and that any criticism of a “surge” in illegal immigration was a “white supremacist idea.”

“They want to say, ‘What about the surge?’ Well, first of all, gut check. Stop. Anyone who’s using the term ‘surge’ around you consciously is trying to invoke a militaristic frame and that’s a problem because this is not a surge,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “These are children and they are not insurgents, and we are not being invaded, which, by the way, is a white supremacist idea, philosophy; the idea that if an other is coming in the population, that this is like an invasion of who we are.”

In a piece titled “Do Not Look Away From Evil,” Bari Weiss wrote “But maybe there is another evil, beyond the monstrousness of the the attackers and the cruelty of the bystanders. And that is the evil of lying about — or purposefully misdiagnosing — the problem to fit The Narrative.”

“As Zaid Jilani explained last week,” Weiss continued, “the official media story about these anti-Asian hate crimes is that they are instances of white supremacy. ‘If you thumb through news articles from the past few days or read over statements from leading politicians, you’d imagine that the Ku Klux Klan is responsible for the spree of robberies, assaults and murders of Asian-Americans across the nation. The phrase ‘white supremacy’ is used repeatedly,’ he wrote. ‘This narrative is pervasive, but it bears no relationship to the evidence before us. Not only are none of the high-profile attackers over the past few months white supremacists, many of them aren’t even white.’”

And this is precisely the issue. The political Left are more concerned with leveraging current events as further evidence of systemic “white supremacy,” for which the only cure is so-called “progressivism.” When instances can be linked with “whiteness” in any form — whether such characterizations are relevant or not — then they are embraced with glee. When instances cannot logically be linked with “whiteness,” such as the rate of anti-Asian violence committed by black perpetrators, then not to worry! By relying on a “soft bigotry of low expectations,” these people only commit these crimes because they are victims of whiteness.

In simple terms, every question has the same answer. And when every question has the same answer, it’s likely that someone is lying to you.
