Speed Up Firefox!

I will admit that Firefox really rapes my system but thanks to this simple yet effective tweak my browsing experience just got a MAJOR boost. Btw if you have 2Gb of RAM or better you will love this tweak. I browsed egotastic and opened many images and unlike before Firefox didn’t lag.

Plus, Totse seems to be much faster now.

The tweak is simple. There was a workaround that involved moving your cache/profile files into a RAM drive. But that involved adding a new driver and moving your profile and setting new path etc. In short it was a bit lengthy and not noob friendly. Plus, if I lost power I might lose everything.

This method that I just found today is easier and it just works. Firefox has an inbuilt option that allows users to use RAM as cache. You just have to disable disk cache and add a simple entry which will enable memory cache.

Here are the instructions:

  • Type about:config into the address bar
  • Type browser.cache into the Filter field
  • Set browser.cache.disk.enable to false (double click it)
  • Set browser.cache.memory.enable to true (double click it)
  • Right click > New > Integer; type browser.cache.memory.capacity; press OK
  • Type in 100000 (this is equivalent to 100 megabytes); press OK
  • Close all Firefox tabs and windows, and then restart the browser
  • Now instead of adding 10000 etc just add -1. -1 means Firefox will automatically allot the required RAM and you don’t have to worry about a thing. Just restart and run some benchmarks.

While I am on this subject I would recommend everyone another Add-on. It’s called Memory-Fox. Although I disabled it before using this tweak it did help me when Firefox was just being mean to me. MemoryFox helps you limit Firefox memory usage and in a way it keeps your Firefox browser running for hours without lagging like a cheap whore. Before using MemoryFox, my Firefox would lag badly and I was forced to restart it time after time but thanks to it, I can keep FF open for 3 days and it will still work.

You can download Memoryfox from here
