This website has plenty of information on safes lockpicking, and general security, but alot of it is either inaccurate, or outdated, or not very surreptitious (undetectable). If you wish to buy lockpicks, I suggest http://southord.com or http://lockpicks.com if your scared your mommy will find out your buying lockpicks off the internet and ground you, then grind your own. http://crypto.com has accurate information on grinding your own picks.

To the good stuff!:

Basic lockpicking is very simple, and easy to learn. To pick you must apply light tension to a lock with your tension wrench. Then you must insert your short hook, also called the feeler, or the finger into very back of the lock. Then carefully feel for the first pin, being the one in the back. slowly lift it up to the sheer line being the line where the pin is neither too high, nor too low. Then do each pin past that one one at a time. This may have to be done on some pins a couple of times, as some pins often time bind before the rest. There are easier ways of opening a lock, such as raking the pins, or breaking something. However if your trying to be sneaky (maybe your breaking into the history teachers' room to steel answers, and you don't want him to change the test because he knows someones been in there, or be investigated).

Raking is by far easier, but if your not good at feeling, you won't be able to pick higher security locks, such as medeco, mulTlock, abloy, or abus. To rake a lock, such as a kwikset deadbolt/doorknob, or a brinks padlock because your in a hurry use one of 3 methods: one is scrubbing, this is done by pushing to the pins with the C rake also known as the standard rake, or the snake, and going back and forth quickly over the pins while bouncing a light tension with your tension wrench; Another technique is to use either the diamond, the L rake, or the half ball to snap the pins. To snap the pins simply take one of these rakes, and push up the last pin like you would with the feeler, and then keeping the picking end on the pin lay the body of the rake over all the pins, and pull it out straight, and quickly. This often times is the fastest way to open a lock, and do not forget a very light tension with your tension wrench, until the pick is out of the lock, and then add slightly more.

Technique number 3, works best on locks with big keyways: simply apply tension, and insert the ball, and then carefully, and very slowly wiggle it out over the pins(this has never failed me). I prefere a twisted tension wrench as it gives you the most control.

If it appears you have picked a lock, but it is not turning, try a little more tension, and if it still doesn't go, then you have pushed the pins too far up, and you have to start over again. If you are petty, and skill less, then you may want to buy a snap gun, or an electric pick, as they do the work for you. However they are noisy, and do not pick many higher security locks. So they are covert, as they are less likely traced than forced entry, but they are not surreptitious as they might be heard. If you want to learn more, then ask me. Here is the most accurate information I have ever read on safe cracking, and manipulation, including myths, and realities of drilling (not surreptitious), and finding the combo without damage (surreptitious): http://www.crypto.com/papers/safelocks.pdf.
