CD or DVD Return Fraud

Acquiring

When you go to purchase the CD or DVD check the packaging. There are usually three different types of packaging:

1) Shrink-wrapped with adhesive tag on top

2) Shrink-wrapped with adhesive tag on top and bottom

3) Shrink-wrapped with adhesive tag on top, bottom, and side

Note what type of packaging you want to work with before making your purchase.

1st Procedure

The easiest containers to open and return are the ones that only have the adhesive tag on the top. First, you open the shrink-wrap very carefully. Usually it is folded down on two sides like a present. Unfold one side and slide the item out of the shrink-wrap. Now, all you have to do is open the bottom side of the case and remove the disc from inside. This may be tricky in a DVD case, as sometimes you are required to press a button for the disc to release. To bypass this, insert a rod like object from the side and press the bottom while taking the disc out from the bottom. After the disc is removed you may want to replace it with a blank disc or a disc you don't want. This would keep a worker from noticing a weight difference. Next you need to slide the shrink-wrap back over the item, fold down one side, lightly spread adhesive over it, and fold the other side down.

2nd Procedure

Opening this type of case won't be as easy as the first as opening this one from the bottom will break the seal on the side. To avoid this, first measure where each label lies on the opening of the case. Now, you will need to carefully peel or steam off the side label and maybe the top label if you wish. Then open the case and replace the disc, if you want to. To reseal, line the labels up with the measurements you took, apply adhesive and reseal. Now slide the item back into the shrink-wrap, fold down one side flap, apply adhesive, fold down the other side, and reseal.

3rd Procedure

Obviously you will need to repeat the 2nd procedure three times and then reseal the item in its shrink-wrap as before.

Returning

There isn't much to worry about when returning an item since you have the receipt and the item appears to be all there. You may want to plan some excuses to use incase you are asked why you needed to return it. Personally, I say that I picked up the wrong album and wanted a different one but a friend is going to give it to me. Also you might say that you wanted the earlier sequel to the movie that you purchased and you got it as a present later that week.

Notes

If you are particularly paranoid, wear gloves and replace the discs with new blank discs.
