Here is a little trick that I figured out a couple years ago while talking to Microsoft hardware support on the phone. The situation was that I spilt water on my Microsoft Natural Keyboard, so I decided to tell them that it mysteriously stopped working ;).

Well they said they would be happy to ship me a new one out all they needed was the P/N (Product Number ?) from the back of the device. Well I gave it to them and they said they would have a new one shipped out 2nd day air today! Which was great but when I asked them where to ship the old one back they just said 'Throw it away' I was flabbergasted.

So I did just as they said and sure enough 2 days later my brand new keyboard arived. Well after that phone call I got an idea to drive off to my local WalMart and copy the P/N off of one of there display Joysticks...

Well sure enough 2 days later I received my brand new Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback joystick...

I have done this with just about every hardware product that Microsoft makes.

If its not a product that they have out on display then just open the box and write the number down that way. If they ask you how long ago you bought the product just make sure you tell them it was less then 90 days ago and you received it as a gift(so they can't tell you to take it back to the store you purchased it from.). Caution this will not work with any other brand (at least none that I have tried) most will ask you to return the broken equipment first or give a credit card.

Good Luck !
