The following is a comprehensive and accurate description of common (and some uncommon) psychostimulants to the best of the author's knowledge. The information herein is geared toward individuals interested in stimulants in a recreational setting. It is the author's belief that every individual has the right to make his or her own decisions regarding what to put in his or her own body. Therefore, it is beneficial for a potential drug user to have access to accurate information to make this decision. Stimulants are a class of drugs that "speed up" the nervous system. Positive effects include a boost in energy, heightened interest in stimuli, and euphoria. Negative effects are not surprising in their nature; they include racing heart, jitteriness, anorexia, and insomnia.
Stimulants can be broken into two major categories: dopaminergic/adrenergic stimulants and non-dopaminergic stimulants. Dopamine and noradrenaline are neurotransmitters in the brain that control excitation and pleasure, among other things.
[B]NON-DOPAMINERGIC STIMULANTS[/B]
Caffeine: Present in coffee, tea, and many major soft drinks. Caffeine inhibits the action of Adenosine in body & brain cells. Addiction and habituation are possible but unlikely; going without a cup of coffee in the morning would most likely cause nothing more than a headache, however. It is not commonly considered a drug of abuse due to it's quite widespread use among americans and its legality.
Nicotine: The active principle of tobacco. Nicotine stimulates the acetylcholine receptors in one's nervous system. Addiction and habituation are [I]almost[/I] unavoidable, and a considerable number of lung and heart disorders are associated with its long term use. Nicotine secondarily stimulates dopamine and endorphin receptors, which is, in part, why addiction is so intense.
[B]DOPAMINERGIC/ADRENERGIC STIMULANTS[/B]
These stimulants all share the dopamine and noradrenaline pathways as their places of action, so they all show very similar effects. They vary, however, in their potency, in their duration, and their street price. In general, these drugs are far more stimulating than the other stimulants. Addiction, both physical and psychological, is likely to occur over long term use. It is common for abusers of these drugs to stay awake for days on end. After such use, however, they cause an intense crash; a period of paranoia, hunger, sleep complications, and perhaps undesired hallucinations. All are potent decongestants. Overdose is possible and will probably involve heart complications. Frequent nasal use can result in nosebleeds and, eventually, a ruptured septum.
The following are Dopaminergic/Adrenergic stimulants, more or less in order of potency:
Bupropion (Wellbutrin, Zyban)- [I]legal w/ prescription: ADD, Depression, Smoking[/I]. Bupropion is a dopaminergic stimulant, but it has little or no abuse potential. It is an SDRI (Selective Dopamine Reuptake Inhibitor), and the S means that it doesn't get you high.
*[Pseudo]Ephedrine (Sudafed)- [I]legal OTC as a decongestant[/I].
Methylphenidate (Ritalin)- [I]legal w/ prescription: ADHD[/I].
Cathinone- [I]illegal under DEA Schedule I[/I].
*Amphetamine (Adderal, Dexedrine)- [I]legal w/prescription: ADD, obesity[/I]. Dexedrine is nearly twice as potent as Adderal. See *. Typically $1-3 per pill depending on variety and area.
Methcathinone (Cat, Ephedrone)- [I]illegal under DEA Schedule I[/I].
Cocaine (Blow, Rock, Coke)- [I]illegal under DEA Schedule I[/I]. One of the few naturally occuring stimulants. Characterized by short duration. Free base cocaine or crack can be smoked, whereas cocaine powder can be snorted or injected. Typically $25-100 per gram depending on area, quality, and quantity bought.
*Methamphetamine (Crystal Meth, Ice, Methedrine, Desoxyn)- [I]legal in pill form w/ prescription: ADD, obesity[/I]. Desoxyn is methamphetamine in a pill.
*These drugs come in several flavors. They all can come as Dextro- or Levo- isomers, and as free bases or salts. The Dextro- isomer is many times more potent than the Levo- one. Dexedrine contains all Dextroamphetamine, whereas Adderal contains both forms. Desoxyn contains all Dextromethamphetamine, whereas Vicks Vapo-Rub contains all Levomethamphetamine. All of these drugs in pill or powder form are salts, to be taken orally, or snorted or injected to produce effects almost immediately. Free bases are generally oils that can be vaporized and inhaled to speed.
