Reproductive Organs of the Bitch:
The vagina in a bitch is quite a large, expandable muscular/
membranous canal extending from the cervix to the vulva. The
cervix may protrude a short distance into the vagina, (however is
normally hidden from view through the vagina because of its
peculiar position and anatomy. It can rarely be entered, as for
insemination, cultures, or treatment, except during and shortly
after whelping, when it is dilated). Longitudinal (lengthwise)
folds are present throughout the length of the vagina, along with
some transverse (crosswise) folds, and these allow for tremendous
expansion during mating, pregnancy and whelping. The vagina opens
caudally [i.e. towards the tail] into the vulvar area just ahead
of the urethral opening (the outflow tract from the urinary
bladder). It is demarcated from the vulva by a ridge, but a hymen
is not normally seen in a bitch.
The vulva is the external genital organ of the bitch, an it
consists of three parts: the vestibule, the labia, and the
clitoris. The vestibule is the channel or space connecting the
vagina to the outside. On the ventral [i.e. towards the stomach]
floor of the vestibule, just caudal to the vagina, is the opening
to the urethra, from the bladder. It is demarcated as a small
elongated bump or tubercle.
The labia, or lips of the vulva form the external boundary of the
vulva. The labia are soft and pliable and join ventrally [i.e.
towards the stomach] to form a pointed projection that extends
downward and backward from the body. The size of the labia varies
tremendously, depending upon the stage of the bitch's estrus cycle
or pregnancy.
The clitoris is analogous to the male's penis and is a small,
pointed structure that lies along the ventral floor of the
vestibule. It is made up of fat, elastic connective tissue, and a
small amount of erectile tissue.
The vulva and adjacent area become sensitive to touch during
estrus, and this sensitivity can be used as a sign of readiness to
breed. Prior to estrus, if the skin above the vulva and below the
anus is touched, there will probably be no response. As the cycle
progresses, the area will be come responsive, and when stimulated
during estrus, the bitch will flag her tail [i.e. tail is raised
and held to her side] and the vulvar area will be elevated to the
position needed during mating.
Artificial Insemination:
The penis is the male copulatory organ, and is made up of three
principle parts: the root, the body, and the distal, free portion
(glans). The glans is divided into the bulb (bulbus glandis) and
the pars longa glandis. The root and body of the penis are firmly
attached to the ventral body wall, while the glans is free from
the body wall but is entirely enclosed within the prepuce (except
in erection). Deep within the glans is a bone, the os penis,
which gives the structure support, especially during the early
stages of copulation.
The main mass of the penis is made up of an elaborate network of
blood sinuses surrounded by connective tissue. During erection,
the tissue fills with blood and the organ enlarges tremendously.
The bulbus glandis enlarges to a roughly spherical shape, a
conspicuous and unique feature of anatomy in a male dog. It is
the enlargement of the bulb within the caudal part of the vagina
during mating that is responsible for the coital lock, or tie,
characteristic of dogs. The pars longa glandis also enlarges
during erection but does not change in its basic shape. The penis
is relatively fiberous and elastic immediately behind the bulb.
During breeding, it is this area that, when the male first ties
then dismounts, the penis is able to twist 180 degrees without
discomfort to the dog or damage to the tissues.
Semen collection is achieved by physical stimulation and
manipulation of the penis. First, the body and the bulb can be
gently massaged through the prepuce. As soon as the bulb begins
to enlarge, the sheath is slipped back behind and exposing the
bulb, and the penis is grasped with the thumb and the first finger
encircling the bulb. In most dogs, simple, continuous pressure
behind the bulb will stimulate ejaculation, but in others some
intermittent pressure by gently squeezing behind the bulb is
helpful. In still other individuals, some massage along the body
of the penis helps. Many dogs will exhibit involuntary thrusting
activity during ejaculations, but some will not. It does not
appear necessary for ejaculation.
Ejaculation begins with delivery of the first seminal fraction
while the bulb and the body of the penis are enlarging and
achieving erection. The first faction of the semen is relatively
sperm-free and should appear clear and colorless. The second or
sperm-rich fraction follows and is cloudy white. Following is the
third fraction, which is again colorless and relatively sperm-
free. The volume of semen varies with the size of the dog and
between individuals of the same breed. Usually one to ten
milliliters can be collected.
Insemination is done using a sterile, dry syringe and a plastic
inseminating tube six to eight inches in length. The tip of the
tube should be lubricated with a small amount of surgical or
obstetrical lubricant (water soluble). The tube is gently
inserted into the bitch's vagina as far as it can be passed. Keep
in mind the arch over the pelvis while inserting the tube [note:
the vagina of the bitch begins pointed downward, rises upward,
then continues horizontally, with a slight downward slope]. The
tube can be inserted four to five inches in small bitches and the
full six to eight inch length in larger individuals.
