FILM AT 11...
by D.B.

He was having a quiet dinner with his family when she walked walked
into the restaurant. His attention was immediately drawn to her as was
every other male's in the room. She was tall and blonde and she wore a long
flowing scarlet skirt with a loose jacket and a red and black printed
blouse underneath that seemed to hug every curve of her body.
She nearly brushed against him as she made her way to her table. He
could smell the sweet odor of her perfume. It was an almost edible fragrance
that reminded him of flowers and satin and lace. She smiled slightly as she
made eye contact with him. He felt momentarily embarrassed as he realized he
was staring at her. She didn't seem to mind and presented herself as if she
were used to this sort of attention. She seemed self confident and at ease.
He wondered to himself if she were meeting someone or dining alone.
Suddenly there was a disturbing clatter, and he realized much to his
embarrassment that he had been so engrossed with the girl he had dropped his
fork which made quite a loud clank on his plate. Several people nearby were
startled by the sudden noise. His attention returned to his family who
didn't seem to notice he had been temporarily distracted. His face
reddened, his heart raced, and he temporarily forgot about eating. For some
reason he knew that he had to have this girl.
This whole scenario was totally absurd, he thought. Afterall, he was
happily married. He had never had thoughts like this, but something about
her made him feel like a giddy teenager with his hormones running on
overtime. He sighed and tried to concentrate on his meal, but couldn't seem
to get her image out of his head. There was something about her smile that
haunted him. He wanted to know more and was inventing all sorts of ways to
meet her if only for a brief moment.
He excused himself to the men's room and was conscious of someone
watching him as he left the table. He convinced himself it was just his
imagination. He felt awkward and tried to walk deliberately and not stumble.
He almost passed the door to the men's room as he mused about the girl in
the scarlet outfit. Why was he so obsessed with this one girl? His mind
wandered as he pondered his younger days and all the girls he had known
and loved. Those were good times, but now he was older and respected and
settled. Why then did his mind have all these dreams of romantic
encounters? He needed to get back to reality. The cold water he splashed
on his face brought him back for a moment and he was ready to return to his
table.
He exited the restroom and standing directly in front of him was that
girl! His heart leaped in his chest. He found himself struggling for
breath. She stood there smiling directly at him. He didn't know what to do.
She was blocking his way and he had to do or say something, but what? He
opened his mouth to speak but all that came out was silence.
She giggled at him. She seemed amused at his nervous manner. He blushed
terribly and felt like a boy on his first date. Her laughing was almost
musical. He was totally entranced as she moved closer to him. She was so
close he could feel the warmth of her body as she leaned close to his ear
and whispered, "I want you to make love to me tonight."
He couldn't respond. This couldn't be happening. It was a dream and he
was sure he was going to wake up at any moment and find himself home in his
own cozy bed with his wife beside him. But she repeated the invitation in a
distinct and more insistant voice. "I want you tonight. Will you honor my
request?" He wanted her so badly. He would have given anything for this
but now when it was happening he didn't know what to do. He wanted to say
yes, yes, of course. But his emotions were confused and he felt so foolish,
so immature, so vulnerable. Who was she? Why was she making this demand
of him? How could he ever consider this act? But oh!, he wanted her!
She looked into his eyes and he was almost hynotized by her gaze. He
realized she was reaching for his hand as she pressed a small piece of paper
into it. "I'll see you later, she whispered," and turned and walked away
from him leaving him weak and disoriented. He unconsciously put the paper
into his coat pocket and walked slowly back to his table.
The girl was gone. Her table was totally empty and as if it had never
been used. He wondered if he had just imagined all of this. He returned to
reality and quickly dismissed the whole silly affair. Just an illusion he
thought, only a senseless illusion.
Later, leaving the restaurant, he caught just a glimpse of a red sports
car leaving the parking lot. Strange he thought, the plates said "BLONDE",
and a chill ran up his spine. He never felt so unnerved in all his life,
but anyway he thought, it's just an illusion, it's not real, it didn't
happen. The journey home was like a dream, he drove but wasn't conscious of
anything around him. The voices of his family were like flies buzzing
in his ear. He just wanted to go home and go to sleep.
Drat! "I'm sorry honey," his wife said when they entered the house,
"I forgot to buy some bread for your lunch tomorrow. Could you run out and
get some?" She tucked a few bills in his coat pocket and walked away before
he could answer. She always did that. She just assumed he would do what was
expected and he always did. He growled silently and returned to the car.
The hour was late so he had to travel a little farther than usual to
find an open store, but did find the bread and on impulse bought a bottle
of good wine, thinking they could drink it on some special occasion. As he
reached into his pocket for the money , a small paper fell onto the counter.
He quickly picked it up and looked at it. He started to tremble as he read
the words. "I want you, come to me tonight," and it was followed by an
address. He left the store and while walking to his car glanced at the
street sign which for some unexplained reason was directly lighted with a
strange glow. He shivered, the street was the same one that was on the paper
he held in his hand!
"Okay", he thought," If this is a dream I'm darn well going to take full
advantage and he turned the car onto the street and looked for the address
on the paper. He located it easily. It was a small but interesting looking
house with a huge iron fence surrounding it, and a gate which was ornate and
strangely decorated with gargoyles and other mythical beasts. He parked the
car in front and approached the gate. It had a buzzer on it which he pressed
and heard a voice say, "I knew you would come to me, please enter." More
chills were going up and down his spine and he almost turned back, but
decided to see this thing through and confront whoever this girl was and
find out what her game was. Now he was almost angry and boldly approached
the door which was already standing open.
He walked tentatively inside and saw a richly and fancifully decorated room.
Everything was sensuous looking. The furniture was all leather and rich wood
and gleaming brass. Every imaginable type of picture was hanging on the
walls filling the room so that no empty spots could have been found for
anything more to hang or be set. He stood there in wonder at how comfortable
he felt in this room, as if he had been there before. It was a feeling that
frightened him and at the same time made him feel safe and warm.
He began to explore the house further. There was a large dining room
with a massive oak table in the center. He thought it strange there were
only two chairs in the entire room. The table was set with fine china and
crystal. A stylized flower arrangement sat in the center with the fragrance
of of mimosa and gardenia and lilacs. Mirrors hung on every wall tracking
his image as he walked to the next room. The kitchen smelled of spice and
felt warm as if someone had recently been cooking. Pleasant odors filled his
senses.
Then he saw her. She stood in the doorway, wearing a creamy white satin
gown that was embellished with silken embroidery and tiny pearls. She looked
so beautiful! He desired her and knew at once he needed her more than
anything else on earth. He was still confused, but as she lifted her arms
to him he knew this had to be. She spoke in a soft and loving voice.
"Come to me, I have waited for you all too long my darling."
He walked confidently over to her and took her in his arms. It felt right.
He knew this was his destiny and he embraced her, holding her so tightly
that he felt as if they were one. He could think of nothing else. She was
his and tonight they would be together.

"Local police were baffled today by the strange disappearance of a
respected businessman, whose empty car was found locked and abandoned in
a vacant lot on Chicago's Northside today."
