Yeah, I might as well post more. I've had about 10 requests this time
about how to get Suppin, and have had many requests in the past. I don't
subscribe to any of these magazines, although I have been meaning to do
this for a while. I usually buy these magazines at stores in Los Angeles.
My advice to people who have asked is along the lines as follows...
I usually buy them in Asahiya bookstore located in the Yaohan shopping
mall. I buy there because this is a very large bookstore and has
just about every magazine, and has reasonable prices too. I don't
know if they will do mail order though.
Kinokuniya bookstores is widely known in the Anime (Japanese Animation)
fan circles as a great place to get Japanese books, and subscriptions
to Japanese magazines and weekly comics. I understand that they are
very reliable, don't charge much extra for mail order, and will be
able to get just about anything, as long as you know exactly what you
want. There are also stores located in many cities.
Idol Land is a store in Monterey Park (just east of downtown LA) which
caters to anime, and idol (Japanese pop music stars, mostly cute young
girls) fans. They also carry some of these types of magazines, but not
a wide variety. I know I have seen Beppin and Dera Beppin here. They
do mail order for anime merchandise, and I think they'd be happy to
send other stuff as well.
Lastly, Books Nippan. They have a bookstore in downtown LA which carries
many of these magazines. Unfortunately: I believe their mail order
subsidiary is a seperate entity from the bookstore, and only offers
anime materials. They are widely know in the anime fan community as
Crooks Nippan because of their high prices, and poor service. The
prices on these magazines here are much higher than other places. If
you can make it to their store, that's fine, but otherwise you are
taking a lot of risks, in my opinion.
If you can, try to see if a nearby city has any Japanese bookstores. If
they do, you can probably save money and hassle by going there. Of
course, outside of Los Angeles and the Bay Area, these are few and far
between.

Idol Land has a nice store, and does mail order. Their prices are
fairly close to that of the bookstores.
Now, what should I know before buying...
First, these magazines are fairly expensive because they are imported from
Japan. The price varies from magazine to magazine and from issue to issue.
Unlike here, Japanese magazines change their price from month to month
depending on the size, content, etc. of the magazine. In general, the
prices range from $4.50 to $8 per issue here.
In Japan, their are strict laws on what they can show. These laws were
imposed as part of the US occupation and rebuilding of Japan. Generally
there is absolutely no shots of the genitals allowed. Pubic hair is
also banned, but some magazines have been pushing this barrier lately.
Sometimes sexual activity is masked behind a mosaic pattern which is
often used on US TV to hide a suspect or informant's face. This mostly
applies to videos, but many magazines have video review sections which
show screen shots of videos. In printed material, the naughty bits will
usually be covered by black squares, or airbrushed out. They tend to
try as hard to get as much out of this as is possible. You have probably
heard the saying that sometimes less revealing can be more erotic, and
these magazines certainly have perfected this practice.
So what's the difference between all these magazines?
Well, there are an awful lot of these magazines available in Japan.
Fortunately, I have a few favorites which I will describe. They
also have Japanese editions of foreign (to them) magazines such as
Penthouse, Playboy, and Lui, but these (to me) are fairly boring...
Typical US magazines will have 3 or 4 pictorial sections, and the
rest of the magazine is boring talk (actually Playboy has a lot of
good First Amendment type articles, but I won't get into that).
The Japanese magazines tend to be about half pictures. There are
still a lot of articles, but if you can't read Japanese, these won't
interest you.
The main magazines I've bought (there are others, but these seem to
be the more popular ones) are:
Beppin - Beppin means 'cute girl' in Japanese. It is sort of a slang
word. This magazine features many nude pictorials, some sexual action
pictorials, and some video reviews. The quality is always very high.
Dera Beppin - This means Deluxe Beppin. I'm not sure if it is put
out by the same company as Beppin, but it has a bit different focus.
This is a perfect-bound magazine (square spine). It has nude pictorials,
but there is also a lot of sexual action pictorials and other more
sexually suggestive poses, etc., as well as a larger video review
section.
