1.01) What is The Kids in the Hall?
The Kids in the Hall (aka KITH, aka KitH) is a sketch comedy TV show.
KITH is known for its off-beat irreverant comedy and hilariously
accurate and subtle characterizations of both men *and* women (all of
the Kids are male). If you have never seen KITH you are missing out!
Check it out!
1.02) Where can I find the KITH FAQ? How often is it posted?

1.03) Who are The Kids in the Hall?
The Kids in the Hall are Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald,
Mark McKinney, and Scott Thompson. Also appearing occasionally are
Paul Bellini, Brian Hartt, Norm Hiscock.
1.04) Where can I watch KITH? What day/time/channel?
USA:
In the USA, the easiest place to watch KITH is Comedy Central, a cable
network. Comedy Central shows KITH reruns approximately daily at several
different times, including (Eastern times) 1:30pm, 11:00pm, and often late
at night or early in the morning. Comedy Central is not available
in all areas; pester your local cable operator if you do not have it.
Other cable systems make Comedy Central share one channel with another
cable network, so you may have Comedy Central only during certain times
of the day. If this is the case, you still may be able to catch KITH
since it is shown so often. Comedy Central changes its schedule very
often, so this information may no longer be accurate. Check your local
listings (or check alt.tv.kids-in-hall) for the latest info.
Every Father's Day, Comedy Central has a "Father's Day with the Kids"
KITH marathon that lasts up to 12 hours! Other marathons on Comedy
Central (for example, "Canada Day" (July 1) and "The Joy of Sketch")
also feature KITH sketches, but generally not entire shows. There are
occasionally other KITH-only marathons on CC, though, so keep an eye out.
[ ???? Is KITH still on CBS ???? ]
The broadcast network CBS showed KITH episodes late Fridays or Saturdays.
CBS shows two episodes separated by a short sketch that explains that
another show is coming up next. So CBS episodes are in fact an hour long.
Note that it is up to each local CBS affiliate station to decide when to
show KITH. Some show it very late at night and some don't show it at all.
You may have two or more CBS affiliates in your area; if it is not on one,
it might be on another. Check your local listings.
The premium cable network HBO used to show premiere, uncensored KITH
episodes, but once KITH moved from HBO to CBS there were no more
HBO episodes.
Canada:
In Canada, KITH is on CBC Monday nights at 9:00pm.
UK:
In the UK, KITH is no longer being aired.
Satellite:

The Netherlands: channel Nederland 3, Tuesdays 8:00pm
Greece: channel Seven-X, weekdays 8:00pm

1.05) Is KITH censored? Where can I watch uncensored shows?
The Kids in the Hall is censored on Comedy Central and CBS to remove
adult language and (very) occasional nudity. (On CBS in the early days
there was much less censorship than today for some reason.) There are
also apparently some sketches that have never been aired by either
Comedy Central or CBS because of language and/or content. HBO, CBC and
UK shows are/were uncensored. However, some HBO sketches have not
appeared on CBC or were changed. Currently in the USA there is no
network to watch uncensored shows on.
Keep in mind that the uncensored lines appear in the closed captioning,
so if you have a CC decoder, and the sketch is closed-captioned, you can
read the uncensored line if you can't figure it out from context.

Some sketches are censored by being re-shot. There is no way to tell if
a sketch has been re-shot to remove adult language except by checking
the Censored Lines section in Part 3 of this FAQ.
1.06) Is KITH closed-captioned?
The Kids in the Hall is occasionally closed-captioned on Comedy Central.
There is no definite pattern of which shows are closed-captioned. In
fact, within one show some sketches may be closed-captioned while others
are not. And the same show on Comedy Central may be closed captioned one
time it is shown but uncaptioned the next time it is shown. KITH was much
more regularly (perhaps always) closed captioned on HBO.

KITH is captioned in Canada by the inept, subliterate captioners at the
National Captioning Center (early years of the show) or the even more
appallingly inept and subliterate captioners at Premier Subtitling
(recent years). On HBO the show was probably captioned by the OK
captioners a the (U.S.) National Captioning Institute. Comedy Central
may be running captioned dubs from either source, or uncaptioned dubs.
In the former case, the captions are not likely to contain the same
censoring as the audio; that's a sophisticated detail I expect Comedy
Central doesn't want to spend the money on. In other words, when Scott
Thompson says "blow job," a hearing viewer with captions on could read
it without hearing it.
1.07) Are spellings on the closed-captioning "official"?
Almost definitely not. This FAQ lists the closed-captioned spellings of
character's names in the recurring characters list under "CC Name" as
possible alternate spellings to consider, until "official" names are
known. Information from various sources about official sketch names
and spellings will be collated and compiled into the FAQ in future
versions.
In at least one HBO sketch the closed-captioning spelled Darryl "Doril";
it has also been spelled "Darryl". As an example of the fallibility of
the closed captioning in general, in one head crusher (Mr. Tyzik)
sketch, the closed captioning often used the word "curse"(!) instead of
"crush".
Then again, Darryl was spelled "Derell" by Comedy Central in some promos
during their "Joy of Sketch" Weekend in 1993, so go figure.
1.08) Where can I get Comedy Central info/schedules?
There used to be a free (snail) mailing list, but it has been cancelled.
There is now a phone number that has some Comedy Central info, it is
212-767-8851. There is no specific KITH info there usually, but it
apparently doesn't cost (except for the cost of the phone call).

1.09) What's with all the crossdressing?

The Kids tried to have women in the troupe but the womens' careers took
off too quickly and they would go solo. Feeling that they were missing
out on the majority of comic premises (relationships, etc) they decided
to play the womens' parts themselves. You will notice that some
actresses do appear in more than one sketch when they are available.
The cross-dressing is not for the comedic effect of men in drag. The
Kids do their best to portray female characters with as much depth and
character as any other role and try to put the focus on the characters
and not the men in dresses.
1.10) Are any of the Kids gay?
Does it really matter? But for the curious...
In a January 94 _Village Voice_ article ("La Dulce Musto"), Micheal
Musto writes:

Foley, Dave. b. Jan. 4, 1963? m. Tabatha (Dec. 31, 1991);
1 s. Ned (Dec. 25, 1992)
Born in Toronto. Watched a lot of TV. Dropped out of a Toronto
alternative high school and did stand-up. Met Kevin at an Improv class
given by Second City. Worked with him as movie house ushers. At 22 was
cast as the lead in "High Stakes" ("confusingly edited and crudely
directed"--Toronto Globe and Mail) but did not become overnight
success. Now poised to become an International Hearthrob due to his
starring role as 'Chris' in "It's Pat".
McCullough, Bruce. b. 1961?
Born in Edmonton, raised in Calgary. ("I was a moody kid. Now I'm a
moody adult") Split his time between playing bass guitar in bands and
comedy. In '81 started going to TheatreSports improv, and met Mark.
Still plays his guitar, and has directorial ambitions.
McDonald, Kevin. b. May 16, 1962. m. Tiffany (1993)
Born in Montreal (1 older sister) to Hamilton and Sheila. An asthmatic
TV watching kid. Father a dental-equiptment salesman ("oh yeah, Daddy
drank") who was transferred to Burbank for a year or so when Kevin was
small. The family then moved back to Toronto. Kevin was a drama major
at Humber College, but got kicked out because he was only good at the
comedy. ("I always thought I'd be Montgomery Clift, which is weird,
because I was 250 pounds") Enrolled in an improv class and met Dave.
Plays guitar, writes songs and sings occasionaly with his wife. Hoping
to cut a record soon.
[Kevin's wife is in the sketch "Girlfriends Leave the Country", where
Kevin and Dave party around the world. She plays Kevin's girlfriend.]
McKinney, Mark. b. June 26 (or 16?), 1961(?) (or 1960?)
Son of a Candian diplomat, born in Ottawa but spent his childhood in
Trinidad with his brother (Nick, another comedian) and sister. He went
to Paris at 10, then Washington D.C. at 13, where he was put in
boarding school. Went to college, lasted two semesters before dropping
out and in Calgary met Bruce while doing TheatreSports. It appears he
is about to be sucked once again into the evil vortex called SNL.
Thompson, Scott. b. June 12, 1959
Born in North Bay, raised in Brampton. Second oldest of four
hockey-playing boys. At 19, he got into an educational program called
Canada World Youth and got to spent some time in the Philipines. When
he got back he enrolled in acting at York University, but was requested
to leave in his third year for being disruptive. Had jobs as a security
job (fired for being found asleep in the company president's
office...naked) waiter (fired for being mouthy), bartender (mouthy).
Tried improv and stand up, and realized that whatever he did, he would
have to do it on his own terms, as a gay comedian. In '84 saw the KITH.
He sings he dances he acts he does comedy -- who knows what could
happen.

There seems to be a lot of family history explored in various Kids'
sketches, and an almost-too-close-to-the-bone examination of their
respective family dynamics can be found in the classic sketch "Didja
ever beat up your dad?"
1.12) What are the origins of KITH?
From [email protected] (M.S. Burton):
The chronology goes like this: Bruce and Mark met doing TheatreSports in
Calgary & started to write/work together. Dave and Kevin met at a
Toronto Second City Improv class, and while working as Art House movie
ushers started to write/work together. Both pairs attempted to make it
on their own; Bruce and Mark as "The Audience", Dave & Kevin (and
various other comedians) as "KITH". The two pairs meet in Toronto, and
combine forces in 1984; they work at small clubs during the year as the
KITH when Scott (who's been trying improv and stand up) approaches
them. He does several guest spots, and officially joins in January of
1985. ("They sang me a little welcome song")
About this time Pam Thomas, scouting for SNL, saw them and had them
audition for Franken & Davis, and that was when Mark and Bruce got
their stint as writers on the show. They worked SNL, Dave made his
movie debut with "High stakes" and Scott and Kevin worked with the
"Second City" touring group. They were re-united in '86 and started
doing longer shows at clubs. "Lurching Seaward" with Sandra Shamus
(later the star of her own show, "My boyfriend's back and there's gonna
be laundry") had early versions of the analysis of comedy sketch, Clem
@ the Barber Shop, Brad and Tiffany's (later Nina) date, and a long
sketch/playlet about a bad comedian named Tramouth. "Grave Robbers from
Hipsville" gave birth to the Dr. Seuss bible. It was in '86 that Lorne
Michaels finally saw them work as a troupe, and started making plans
for a TV show. In 1987 he sent them to NY to what was essentially
Comedy Boot Camp (if you can make it there, etc., etc.) and in 1988
their HBO special/pilot aired. The series began in 1989.
1.13) What is the future of KITH?
The last KITH show ever was taped Wednesday, July 13, 1994.
The last show was aired on Comedy Central on December 25, 1994.
Mark and Bruce will be acting and/or writing for NBC's Saturday Night Live
next season. Bruce has been making short films for SNL. Mark is
now a regular cast member and appears in the opening credits.
Dave starred in the "It's Pat" movie (based on the Saturday
Night Live character) as Pat's lover Chris.
Mark's younger brother Nick is on the sketch comedy show "The
Vacant Lot", which can be seen on Comedy Central and CBC.
Brian Hartt may be joining John Stewart's upcoming Paramount show as a
writer.

Bruce is doing an album for Atlantic Records, featuring his musical
pieces (probably including "Daves", but the album will be mostly new
stuff) and his monologues, which he's so good at; I think it'll be a
super great album. He's working on it with Shadowy men and Bobby
Wiseman (Canadian musician/ex-Blue Rodeo). I think it comes out late
this year or early next year. Is everyone as excited about this as I
am?
Dave Foley may show up in a mid-season replacement sit com thius
spring...apparently something w/Joe Flaherty. Don't know anything more
about it.
Kevin is in the next Nat'L Lampoon movie...don't know the name or the plot.
Bruce begins his SNL films in January, and his album should be out
February or March.
Thought you'd be tickled by the following info: the forthcoming Bruce
McCulloch album features a piece ABOUT Seattle...it's called "Vigil," and
it's quite brilliant! Like most of the stuff on the McCulloch album,
it's kind of a monologue, kind of a song...it was inspired by the Kids'
visit to Seattle in April, when their show there (unfortunately)
co-incided with the day of the Kurt Cobain vigil...all of the Kids (except
for Bruce) attended that vigil, by the way...Mark McKinney said that the
meaning/somberness of the event (the vigil, that is) was somewhat
dissipated by kids coming up to him and going "I'm crushing your head!"

[Bruce's album] is being recorded at the Gas Station in Toronto, produced
by Bob Wiseman (ex-Blue Rodeo, producer of Edie Brickell, Andrew Cash,
Bob Snider,...) apparently there are spoken bits, but it's predominantly
musical, ala Corky & the Juice Pigs, BNL, Denis Leary. the tracks are
pretty low-fi, so I don't know about a major label release.

Here's the latest stuff on the KIDS: They just wrapped up a first draft
of a movie screenplay tentatively called "The Drug".
Kevin McDonald is working on a new National Lampoon movie in Toronto. Dave
Foley moved out to LA to pursue his movie career.
Mark McKinney is living in New York and prepping for his first season on
SNL. Bruce just finished the tracks for his album for Atlantic Records
which should be out in January. Scott Thompson has lying low and is
currently not working on anything in particular. Paul Bellini just
finished the tracks for his album and is label shopping.

Norm Hiscock, former Head Writer of the Kids in the Hall, made his SNL
debut in the Premiere episode of SNL's 20th Season.
During the Lexus commercial spoof, the one called the "Enigma" or
something, about two teams of engineers designing the same car with
completely different goals in mind and creating a car that's "fast and
slow" "small but big" "economical and gas guzzling" etc. Norm Hiscock
appeared as one of the engineers. It wasn't a very funny bit and it went
too long, but it made me jump up and down anyway because Norm got a fair
amount of screen time.

the Jon Stewart Show. He's also appeared in a few sketches on the show.

Paul Bellini is leaving for Halifax today (Dec 4) for three months to
begin his new job as a writer for a Canadian comedy program titled "This
Hour Has 22 Minutes."

Bruce's album, "Shame Based Man", is tentatively scheduled for
release March 14 on Atlantic Records. It will include "Door's fan" from
Today I had the treat of getting to hear Bruce McCulloch's upcoming album.
Filled with mostly spoken word over music pieces (ala King Missile),
Bruce does sing occassionally. The album, tentatively titled "Shame Based
Man", is tentatively scheduled for release on March 14 on Atlantic. It's
funny, odd and a must-have! Here's a track listing, with a few notes and

Dave Foley taped a pilot for NBC last month tentatively titled News Radio.

thing). But we'll get to see I guess two Kids on a regular basis (with Mark

I've been given permission to pass on this info on the condition that I
don't reveal the source. The source is someone close to the troupe, and I
fully trust this individual. Here's the news:
1. Scott Thompson just signed on to join the cast of The Larry Sanders
Show, the brilliant satire on HBO!!!!! The contracts were JUST signed and
he'll the cast when it returns for it's next season (the show is in
hiatus right now). I don't know what his role will be.
2. Look for another KITH tour in late Spring, probably on the West Coast.
3. Thursday, Feb 2, the entire troupe did a reading of the entire script
for "The Drug" in L.A. for Paramount executives. Lorne Michaels read the
stage directions while all five KITH members read their parts. The green
light hasn't been given yet, but my source was there for the reading and
said the script is dark, funny and overall brilliant! Mark is the focal
character, a Darrill-type scientist involved in giving a Prozac -like
drug to a depressed small town. Some of the lesser known KITH characters
appear in the script (no Chicken Lady, Sir Simon, etc.-lesser known
characters) along with new characters. This has the makings of a terrific
film!
That is literally everything I know right now. I'll pass on more as I
learn more.
1.14) Is there a KITH movie?
There may be a KITH movie by Summer 1995.
Shortly after the last taping, the Kids went to a retreat in Huntsville,
Ontario, Canada for two weeks to write the script and get drunk with
teenagers.

is going to revolve around Prozac. Seriously. It may feature familiar
characters, but that won't be what the thing revolves around. It'll be

There will be soon. The trade paperback will be titled "Memos From AT&Love:

1.22) Are there "official" names for KITH sketches?
Official (canonical) sketch names can sometimes be found in the credits
of the show when an alternate director credit is given. Also, some
sketches have "offical" names that are given at the beginning of the
sketch (for example, "Chalet 2000"). Official sketch names are listed
in the sketch list in Part 2 of this FAQ followed by an asterisk "*".
All other sketch names in this version of the FAQ are made up. However,
information from various sources about official sketch names and spellings
will be collated and compiled into future versions of this FAQ.
1.23) Who does the opening theme for KITH? Do they have a
cassette/CD? Do they do the bumper music and other music
in the show as well?
The opening theme is by the group Shadowy Men on A Shadowy Planet.
Shadowy Men on A Shadowy Planet are Brian Connelly (guitar, keyboards,
backing vocals), Reid Diamond (bass, lead vocals), and Don Pyle (drums,
backing vocals). Reid and Brian have known Bruce since high school;
Reid even played in a band with Bruce at one point. Reid and Brian had
a band in Calgary, it broke up, they came to Toronto and Reid joined a
band (Crash Kills Five, 1 single, 1980) with Don Pyle. In 1984 the three
coalesced into the Men.
The theme is called "Having an Average Weekend" on the release "Savvy
Show Stoppers" (Cargo Records, 1990). The version on "Savvy Show
Stoppers" is NOT the exact same version as used on the show. The
KITH theme on this release is not mixed as well as that heard on the
show; the lead guitar riff tends to fade into the background. All but
one of the tracks on this release are instrumentals similar to the KITH
theme in style. From the liner notes: "This savory selection of
socially irrelevant songs is a compilation of seven inch records
released on our own Jetpac label in Canada."
Brian does the artwork on the albums (and the "30 second story"
puppets), and Don painted the Fine Ham on the cover of "Dim the
lights..." According to Reid, the singer on "Bim Bam Baby" is "George
from a comedy duo named Al + George". [From [email protected]

Westerholm he's still doing music."]
SMOASP also do the bumper music (the music played right before/after
commercials) and some of the music used in the show itself. One can
usually tell it's SMOASP because of their distinctive twangy guitar
style.

1.26) Where and when and how often is KITH taped?

KITH used to be taped once a month on Wednesday and Saturdays at
CBC Studio 7 in Toronto. They did two shows each night. Since July
13, 1994, there have been no tapings.

KITH was NOT, I repeat, NOT cancelled. The lads voluntarily chose to stop
taping the show after five seasons to pursue other projects, some of which
involve the group KITH, and some of which don't. As Scott Thompson said
at the last taping -- when the show ended and they all come out to take a
bow and thank the audience -- "We all thought this season was going to
suck, but it turned out to be really good."
1.29) Are there KITH concert tours? How can find out where/when?
KITH toured the east coast of North America in December 1994.
