Fluent: Created and used by the CIA, this program automatically translates foreign communications on the Internet. It currently works with nine languages, including Russian, French and Japanese. An update to the code will help it understand Arabic as well.

Oasis: Also from the CIA, it listens to worldwide radio and television broadcasts, transcribes them and creates reports for the government to analyze.

dTechtive: This software takes grainy, blurry footage from surveillance cameras and makes it clear.

EnCase: Software that recovers deleted computer files. The FBI is using it right now on machines seized in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks investigation.
