The Oil Weapon

by George Hulshart

Something was wrong, during the mid-1980s, with the layoff of 2,000 US citizens (including George Hulshart) from ARAMCO. ARAMCO was a US corporation and carried the standard equal opportunity disclaimer. Mr. Hulshart believes that EEOC Chairman Clarence Thomas made a speciously narrow charge and defense, and therefore the "Ali Boureslan vs. ARAMCO" case was lost. Clarence Thomas would never respond directly to George Hulshart. The fact that the Supreme Court split 6 to 3 and one of the six also had some doubt, was not enough to convince Congressman to hold hearings. Republican National Committee Chairman Frank Fahrenkopf wrote to George that the RNC was strictly a fundraising arm of the Party. Democrats would not respond either, even though entertaining Anita Hill's lack of evidence in the 1991 Senate Confirmation Hearings of Clarence Thomas to the US Supreme Court.

C-Span carried Nov.5, 1999, a Heritage Foundation panel discussion on the fall of the Soviet Union. Herbert E. Meyer, who was Special Ass't to CIA Director Bill Casey, said that early on Reagan and a select group planned an oil strategy to bankrupt the Soviet Union, and it worked. The Soviets were heavily dependent on oil sales to Europe. Oil production was increased in the North Sea and Mexico, etc, to make oil sufficiently cheap that the Soviet Union had difficulty competing.

Saudi Arabia (King Fahd) was complicit and understood the Reagan plan, even though they couldn't increase production due to OPEC quotas. Other OPEC countries were cheating and selling beyond their quotas; about 1986-87 King Fahd told Sheik Yamani to tell the OPEC countries to stay inside the quotas or Saudi Arabia would flood the world with cheap oil. Yamani refused, and lost his job. This would have been the Reagan plan in extreme, and got the US attention required, at a time when Saudi Arabia (businessmen?) were giving millions to the Nicaraguan Contras (on US prompting) and at a time when ARAMCO was laying off US citizens but not Saudi citizens while sending Saudi citizens to work and learn at other US corporations on US soil. Clarence Thomas saved Reagan/Bush from a major foreign policy embarrassment with Saudi Arabia. He had never been a judge, but was promoted in mid-1989 to the Wash DC Appeals Court and received fast track training to get a US Supreme Court appointment in 1991. This was President George Bush's doing. In his recent book ALL THE BEST Pres.Bush talks about his "good friend" Gorbachev, but never mentions the oil strategy to bankrupt his good friend. Fitting into the plot, in early 1986, VP Bush was making a Goodwill Tour of the Gulf countries. Mr. Hulshart regrets not trying to see VP Bush at the Dhahran US Consulate, noting facetiously perhaps Bush would have shown some good will for US citizens getting them other jobs. But, Clarence Thomas got a better job.

Mr. Hulshart reflects, "It is small consolation, buffing my finger nails on my chest, that I helped bring down the Soviet Union." Medal of Freedom not forthcoming, the shaft has been received.

The federal government lost any plausible deniability, in light that Congress would not hear testimony from George Hulshart. Committing mea culpa, Nov 21, 1991, Congress enacted to protect extraterritorial employment, EXCLUDING prior events. A letter written directly to George Bush in Kennebunkport, Maine, was not answered.
