Earth First! - Tree- Spiking as a tactic (because t

Tree-Spiking As A Tactic
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
=o= In fact most Earth First!ers and other monkeywrenchers don't
consider tree-spiking a very useful tactic. It has a rather
limited application and an overblown bad reputation.
=o= The statement was made that tree-spiking indicated that EF!
doesn't care whether people get hurt. In fact, EF! founder Dave
Foreman's _Ecodefense_ handbook goes into great detail methods
of spiking trees so that nobody gets hurt. The _EF!_Journal_
article adds nothing new; Foreman covers ceramic spikes in his
book.
=o= The book also lists a whole lot of things that Foreman feels
are more effective than tree-spiking.
=o= Properly-spiked trees pose no danger to timber workers.
For one thing, the spikes are put high up in the tree, so that
loggers' chainsaws won't hit them. There's been one documented
injury, in a small mill where a blade wasn't covered (thanks to
OSHA deregulations) and hit a nail.
=o= This was widely reported as an "Earth First! tree-spiking"
injury, but it's not even clear that the nail was the result of
a spiking. It follows none of the rhyme and reason of spiking.
And the bottom line? The injured party doesn't blame EF!
=o= A fellow on the Usenet mentioned a friend who was injured
by tree-spiking while chainsawing a tree. I've urged this
fellow to urge his friend to document this claim. Details
are sorely lacking here.
=o= Because the practice is so alienating, a large faction of
EF! -- usually associated with California, the Pacific
Northwest, and Judi Bari -- put out a statement disavowing the
practice. The Dave Foreman faction was not pleased with this,
but that's tough.
The EF! Journal
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
=o= Well, it ain't what it used to be. There have long been
rumors that some of the people putting it out are actually
infiltrators from (most likely) the FBI, intent on screwing
things up. This wouldn't be the first time the FBI has done
such a thing to EF!.

=o= I do think that this particular article suggests no small
measure of cluelessness (if not malice) on the part of the
current _Journal_ staff. I mean really, ceramic spikes are
old and pretty useless news.

More Virgin Woodlands in U.S. Than Ever Before
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
=o= This is nonsense. There might (might) be more *trees*
in the U.S. now than at some particular point in the past,
but that's not even remotely the same thing as there being
as much forest.
=o= We have many acres of "tree farms," which are essentially
monocultural crops of fast-growing species for quick harvest.
There's none of the biodiversity one finds in a real forest,
and consequentially there's nothing to sustain the soil these
tree "crops" are being grown on.
=o= They are vulnerable, unsustainable, and don't provide very
good habitat for willife that depend on real forests.
Old Growth Doesn't Absorb Much CO2
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
=o= It's true that old growth forests aren't carbon sinks and
that new growth is a great carbon sink. But that's not quite
the point. Old growth (as well as rainforests) have a profound
effect on the flow of water vapor, which in turn have as
profound an effect on global warming as the CO2/O2 exchange.

=o=

=o= Disagree with me on any of the above? Fine. If you must
followup, consider moving all discussion to talk.environment,
or at least a reasonable subset of all the newsgroups above.
Also, consider setting the "Subject:" header to something
relevant to what you're saying.
