Where Do These Ideas Come From?
Unlike many other political parties, the LPC does not
operate in a philosophical vacuum. There is a
well-thought out political philosophy and a growing
iterature with contributions from respected philosophers,
economists, historians and novelists. Some of the more
famous names associated with this literature include
Friedrich A. Hayek*, Milton Friedman*, Robert Nozick,
Robert Heinlein, Thomas Szasz, James Buchanan*, Ayn Rand
and P.J. O'Rourke (* Nobel Prize - economics). It's
ideological roots go back to Thomas Jefferson, Adam Smith,
John Locke, Lord Acton and the CATO papers. A glance
through a recent issue of the monthly REASON magazine
will convince you that the literature is living,
stimulating, dynamic and relevant to today's issues.
And what is this political philosophy? In a nutshell,
libertarianism is the belief that:
- Individuals should be free from government interference
to engage in all mutually beneficial activities;
- The social institution the best permits tolerance and
freedom in a world of divergent tastes and beliefs is
private property;
- That the only rightful role of government is to defend
the individual rights of life, liberty and property from
invasion by others.
