Nixon Project FAQ

by J.C. Stanton

What's this project all about?

There are currently 1,779 Hours of Nixon White House Tapes available for reproduction at the National Archives in College Park, Maryland, which is approximately half of the total hours of tapes.

Out of that 1,779 hours, only 60 or so hours have been transcribed. The National Archives has no plans to transcribe any other tapes, but makes the tapes themselves available to the general public.

That's wonderful, but you can't search the text that way. So this is our private effort to transcribe all 1,779 hours of tape, a half-hour at a time, in cronological order.

How can I help?

We need three things:

A) People (in the Washington D.C. area) to go to the national archives, with their cassette recorder, and copy the tapes. It's free, but time consuming, because each tape is half-an-hour. I suggest doing only one at a time, maybe one a week, or one every week. Access to the collection is restricted to those person 18 years of age and over. Don't ask me why, I have no idea.

B) People to transcribe the tapes. You need a standard cassette player, and some kind of standard electronic word processor.

C) Money. This is a very expensive project, as you can imagine. Each tape costs 18 dollars a piece when you order them from the National Archive(it would be better to get them for free, but so far, no one from the D.C. area has stepped forward) plus a variety of "handling" charges means that to ordering one half-hour tape from the National Archives is expensive.

$18 would be just fine, however. If you want to make a contribution, wrap $18 in a sheet of paper with your handle on it(so I know who to give the credit to), stuff it in an envelope and send it to:

I know they say never to send cash through the mail, but we can't take checks or credit cards or anything else, so I don't know what else to tell you. Plenty of people have done it before with no problem.

Ok, I want to transcribe a tape, what do I do?

Just send me an email, and tell me! I will ship a half-hour tape to you.

They need to be transcribed in some kind of electronic format, like Microsoft Word, so I can cut and paste them onto the website. I use Windoz(I know), so if you have mac or linux format, transcribe them into electronic format, and then submit them by going to the "Submissions" button on totse.com. Please keep a copy of it yourself, in case the submissions process screws up(it happens).

If they are in windows format, they can just be emailed to me. No paper copy is required.

After that, the tapes can just be put in the mail and sent back to me. The address for returning the tapes is:

I think it would probably take about a week to transcribe a half-hour tape. Professional transcribers have told me 4 hours for every 1 hour of tape, but they are pros.
