"What Are The Rights Of The Individual
Versus The Rights Of The Majority?"
"If the minority will not acquiesce, the majority must, or the Government must cease..." - Am Lincoln, First Inaugural Address, March 4, 1861
In an idealistic society, the rights of the individual would parallel the interests of the may, hence the government, and all deviation would fall within an acceptable standard of living. Teidvdual has rights, however the majority creates the rules by which the individual must abide. n hery te idea works. Nevertheless, conflicts are bound to arise.
In reality, this standard is in a constant flux, contending between the personal freedom of tdividual, and his obligation towards the government's maintaining of order. When conflicts arisebtenthe two, the emergence of issues arise, forcing a separation of any given public into two ormoe acios. Both sides of the issue can generally present effective and persuasive arguments in sppot o thir roposition. For example, the current debate over gun control is dividing the public nto arios grups. The NRA an other conservative groups are working towards the protection of gun pssesson. Manwhie, lierals of the country are fighting against the right to own and operate the wapon. s of nw, thegovernent supported (and majority supported) possession of arms is still activ. The idividua (or th minoriy) that rejects that position does not have the power to change the aws unti his opiion is acepted b others. Since there are two extremes, a common ground must be st, creatig rules ad regulatons on th ownership of a gun. Ownership is not abolished, but neitheris the rigt to own ad use any un you chose. It is just regulated.
The majority rules because it is supported. The few that disagree are dealt with as an exceptAfter all, if one thing is wrong in a group, you don't destroy the whole group, just the wrong pr.I t continuos to linger, the group will become infected, and sides will change. Destruction wil ecmerapant, and all good is lost. This is a direct comparison on how the main stream lifestyle an beief oftoday are becoming polluted by the ideas of homosexuals, animal activists, feminists envronmntalactiists, and the like. They are taken to the extreme, and by doing so, corrupt the ain sream ajoriy, wh are forced to accept the ideas of the minorities. Personal freedom is lost n the xchang, whic inclues rights.
Within our democratic government, laws are passed or rejected by number of vote. By doing so,nsure that the rights of more people are protected, then satisfying the few who oppose. If huma ihsexist, then the minority must backdown to the majority to insure the freedom for all and theprsevaio of the strongest, then of the weak.
