Weapons Inspectors Offer Security for Saddam

by Viper

With an apparent military campaign against Iraq and Saddam from US forces becoming more imminent time is running out for Saddam to hold on to his power over Iraq and the surrounding territories. Saddam is faced with the idea that weapons inspectors may soon be again uncovering his secrets and the more daunting idea that the world is finally turning on him with full military action only around the corner; Saddam's stance on weapons inspectors is of paramount importance if he wishes to hold onto his power. His ability to negotiate a resolve in relation to weapons inspectors will determine the success of the US campaign for regime change in Iraq for the near future at least.

Saddam must establish a position on the weapons inspectors question which will allow him to hold onto the main body of his military power and internal security network and hold US action against him at bay, this will be very hard as the US position seems to be that any possible access for weapons inspectors into Iraq or agreement of any kind is to little to late on Saddam’s behalf. The US seems to have already planned its attack on Iraq, they have mobilized substantial units to carry out the initial attacks on Iraqi positions and are more than capable of moving any other necessary forces soon after. The US is ready to go it is just waiting for the perfect moment to strike, this is why any talk of resolve this late in the day is both frustrating and dangerous for US forces. Any agreement now on behalf of Iraq would mean US action would likely if not definitely have to be called off and mean the job that was started decades ago in Iraq may never be finished. There seems to be a real fear within the US forces that the strike against Iraq may be left to long, that international politics will put a stop to it completely, so I believe that US action could start at anytime maybe even without substantial media warning. For the moment Saddam should consider the weapons inspectors necessary, if he is going to survive this he needs to make an internationally approved agreement on weapons inspectors now. This will satisfy most of the allies and the US alone is unlikely to consider going to war with an Iraqi nation that has massive international support for their newfound agreements with the west.

There is no doubt that although allowing weapons inspectors into Iraq will put the US military campaign for regime change in Iraq on hold indefinitely, his military might will suffer as a result. If you look at it in the most basic terms after weapons inspectors have looked hard in Iraq they will be more than capable of providing the US with further targets of interest for them in there regular as clockwork air strikes.

Saddam disallowing all access for weapons inspectors should not be really be considered as an option by him, which I don’t think it is. The recent efforts by Iraq to get weapons inspectors back there symbolise that Saddam understands that in the current environment with them he is more powerful and his future as leader of the Iraqi people is more certain by all means. The US are trying hard to keep weapons inspectors out of Iraq as they know the second they step inside the plans for regime change may take a lot longer than planned. All planned attack strategies literally become worthless if Saddam pulls even more support by allowing in weapons inspectors and the US dreams of military closure with Iraq become very unrealistic.
