Help with directx

I am trying to run a cracked civ4 using Daemon Tools Pro to mount the isos' and the install and cracks are all in place. But when I fire it up I get a "could not adjust screen resolution'' error. I use a shitty, low end, but current netbook, running win7. My res is 1024x600 and it wants 1024x720.
Are the program files for directx hidden?(when I go to the dir it is blank) Is there a config I can fuck with somewhere? Do I need to update directx?
