Reset your Firefox address bar default search engine

So, if like me you tend to type search terms into the address bar in Firefox and get a result for Google, then you will need to know this.

I installed some shareware a while ago and instead of Google, my default search engine was Ask Jeeves. A bit shit in comparison.
For this tutorial, I will put in Yahoo search, as I don't know what the Ask Jeeves one was seeng as I already reset it.

Step 1.
Type about:config into your Firefox address bar. If you get a warning about Dragons, just click the button to let you access it. Trust me, you won't fuck your machine up.

Step 2.
In the "Filter" text box, type keyword.url and you'll see this:

Step 3.
Right click the preference.

Step 4.
Click "Reset".

Step 5.
Close the tab.

You have now reverted Firefox back to the default address bar search engine, Google.

But what if I want something other than Google?
Some URLs:
  • Bing:
    http://www.bing.com/search?q=

  • Yahoo:
    http://search.yahoo.com/search?ei=ISO-8859-1&p=

  • Twitter:
    http://search.twitter.com/search?q=

If you want to add another one, then search for something using your preferred engine and copy the URL, but minus your search term. A pattern will emerge, as you can kinda see above.

Download this as a .txt file to keep as your own!

Or you could make your search default these. Not that it really matters these days, but it gives one the essence of security. :p
    • Google Secure

    • Scroogle

^ I swear by Scroogle now, it's pretty awesome. I love how minimalistic it is as well, and they say that all logs are deleted in 48 hours. I like :)

If https were secure I would put my trust in scroogle more than google secure.
By teh way trx thanks for the scroogle intro. I use it on all my browsers including Midori. That essence of sucurity.

^ What's that meant to mean? HTTPS is secure, that's why it's called HTTP(Secure) :D

Yeah, me too. That's the only thing I find myself going to Google for now. Perhaps we can think of something to say to the developers and maybe get an email sent their way. It would be great to see an image search, just because it's so much effort to switch over to Google for that.

It's not really secure bro. :(
It's not just accessible to government but also to other parties like your ISP, Google etc.
But Hell!......It has more security than not using it. :)
Like RemadE said....I wish it had an image search. :(
