It's basically a set of standards about what can and cant be on the radio. Conventional P25 systems don't support CTCSS tone or DCS code for access. Instead they use what is called a Network Access Code, or NAC. They havent been fully implemented due to budget problems.:o:o:o

Basically P25 is a digital radio system, its backwards compatible with analogue radios as most P25 transceivers allow switching between regular analogue services and the newer P25 service. Its similar to the European TETRA system allthough P25 is around 4 times as expensive as TETRA .The protocol supports the use of DES encryption (56 bit), 2-key triple DES encryption (112 bits), 3-key triple DES encryption (168-bits), AES encryption at up to 256 bits keylength, RC4 (40 bit) or no encryption. P25 can be used with or without a repeater meaning it can be used like any other two way radio. it also incorporates a phone interconnect so calls to regular calls can be made as well as well as connections to a data network.
