My friend is about to blow a whole load of money on a Mac, because "they don't get viruses and they're just better than PC's".
He wont take my word for it when I tell him that they are a waste of money, and you're paying for the brand rather than the hardware/software that comes with them. After all, you can buy a fucking awesome PC for half the money you'd spend on a Mac.
So, any help on convincing him otherwise? I plan on showing him this thread if it gets a good response.
Comments
Also tell him he can get pretty much the same effect (less malware + can't run any mainstream software + geek/douche points) by running Linux
Also mention him not having to spend $2000 by using linux.
"They don't get viruses" isn't a technical reason. It's bullshit blind-faith Mac-fag rhetoric, only included because the companion statement of "just better than PCs all-around" doesn't really stand on its own without a qualification like "they don't get viruses". And, as said before, since Macs are now just x86 machines with a different OS, there isn't even a hardware advantage.
See if there's anything interesting here: http://www.google.com/search?q=why+macs+suck
That their 27" fucking rocks and do their specs.
Tell him it might be overpriced for lower middle class people.
Tell him about the number of glitches and bugs it has compared to Windows too.
LOL, that's awesome. I'll link him to that as well as this thread for maximum lulz.
Fuckin' LOL at themacuser.org
As far as I'm concerned all you windows fagz are either poor or working for windows.
*prepares to get attacked by a bunch of poor nerds*
I swore off of mac after both of the Macs in my house broke (They would shut down inexplicably, the mac "geniuses" didn't know what to do. After a while, they just stopped turning on) within about a month of each other.
Don't get butthurt about it being gorgeous, because it is. It's aluminum-finished matte and smoothness will put to shame your fiberglass-blackcoated chassis.
But it's not aesthetics that make it great, it's its functionality.
Yeah they're pricey [rage on faggots] and sure you can't just unscrew it and change it's video card or upgrade it's power supply, but that doesn't mean it's limited. iMacs are awesome.
That being said, it had faulty capacitors and I had to get the power supply fixed under warranty. Apple actually extended that warranty for 3 years. I was like holy shit. If they hadn't, I would have hated them forever. Mine took about 2 years for any problem to arise. It would suddenly shut off while it was sleeping. I got the bad capacitors (power supply I think was where they were) replaced for free.
Now, the downside is that it was fucking expensive. It's also old technology at this point (single core processor, DDR RAM). But during the time I used it, I really loved it for what it was: a computer that aside from the one issue worked without problems the entire time I owned it.
That being said, I don't use it much anymore because my laptop has a Core i5, 4 gb DDR3 and a blu-ray optical drive. My laptop is a hell of a lot faster for video encoding, burning dvds, etc. My iMac doesn't handle flash video very well. It hates youtube (that old single core processor is the problem I think). The other thing is that my iMac runs hot as fuck. It idles at 61C. I need to apply thermal paste but I haven't found any guides on how to do it (I can remove most of the stuff, but I can't figure out how to remove the optical drive.)
Windows and OS X have their strong points and weak points. MS and Apple make good products. The question is wtf do you want to do with your computer? Do you want to game? Get windows. Do you want to not dick around with AV/anti-malware, etc. and are you willing to pay 2x as much for that luxury? Get a mac.
They are not the end all be all. My laptop with windows uses Avira free antivirus, malwarebytes, spybot s&d, ad-aware, comodo internet security (firewall) and I have to scan with all this shit every so often. I use firefox and addons with it to make my laptop more secure. If you do these things and avoid stupid ass websites, you will never have any issues. I have not seen BSOD on windows 7. I have yet to have any huge issue on either vista or 7. I do some basic video encoding here and there, but most of the time I'm watching videos or browsing the web. I don't need a $2000 computer to do that. My $500 laptop does that just fine.
Apple's stuff is overpriced. That's a given. They're using the intel-based hardware now so they're closer to PCs than they were when I bought my PPC iMac. There's not much reason to buy a Mac unless you have the cash, don't game, and don't care that you're overpaying. Buy what you want.
My overall opinion is that yes, Apple's shit is overpriced. I do love my iMac though, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't. I got a lot of good use out of it. Their laptops, however, are another story. They get too fucking hot, even hotter than my iMac. I would never buy a MBP or Macbook. I think they're shitty. I could buy a $500 every year for 4 years or one $2000 MBP. No contest, I'll take the new laptop every year instead.
But I've just recently switched back to Windows (7, to be precise), and it is total shit. I realize now that the only reason I didn't like the mac in the first place was because it was hard to settle in and get used to the entirely new software and such after using windows my whole life.
I can see that my mac was easier to navigate, faster, could run for smoother for longer, was less buggy, and basically superior in every way to what I'm using now. And it's not a hardware issue, believe me. I did like what you're suggesting to your friend and I spent half what I would have spent on a mac to make this thing, and for the price, it's got a lot of value in it. But the fact is, I would have payed the extra money back then if I had realized that I was seriously taking that mac for granted and that windows, in fact, sucks shit.
I haven't tried many other operating systems or brands, but in my experience, mac wins over windows almost every time.
Probably - at least you can make KDE look like Mac
http://linuxhelp.blogspot.com/2006/07/transforming-kde-to-look-like-mac-osx.html
Ahhh the mouse. He has a MagicMouse which was pretty fucking weird until I got used to it. But herein lies the first real problem I've seen with the MacBook. Out of fucking nowhere one day all of the bluetooth drives just disappeared, and now any bluetooth devices will not work with the laptop. I googled around and it seems to be a pretty common problem among Mac users, however I could not find any surefire solutions.
Jesus, seriously? To be honest, I wouldn't use a laptop away from a power supply for that long. But I'm impressed.
Considering my laptop has about a 30-minute battery, I consider it a godsend. I absolutely hate the Mac OS, but I would probably just run Boot Camp and use Windows 7.
1. If you're retarded and don't know shit about virus removals, then yes.
2. How are macs less efficient that PCs? Especially in video editing and graphic designing?
3. Reread what you wrote.
4. ?
I did something similar last night. Not a complete transformation, but I need to take baby steps when changing styles. I can't go from high contrast black to shiny ass mac just like that, you dig?
OSX has native support for ISO images, RAW camera images (digital negatives), a bash shell, X11 support and native support for workspaces. It's system search is also a bajillion times better than Windows', it runs practically silent (except the CD and HDD) and the little magnetic charger is something everyone should do. On top of that everything is consistent (programs look alike).
It just costs too much.
Name some things that Windows does better.
Not including gaming, most game developers stay exclusive to Microsoft due to contract ties. Blizzard (and now Valve) develop for both platforms.
The only arguments I've seen have been "lol, macs a rubbish because their users eat shit olololololololololol i made a funyu!12 oll"
Customization.
[/thread]
Customization of WHAT exactly?
Desktop themes, visual effects options, sound options.
Also, a two-button mouse, and open ability to put whatever aftermarket hardware you want in.
I use my razer lachesis on my iMac. Quite a fail on your part.
Mac supports desktop themes, visual effects, and custom sounds, along with two button mouse, and Mac OS can run on a PC architecture.
BTW, PC hardware doesn't equal windows. IE video cards, sound cards, et cetera can't be used as an argument, especially now that you can install System X on most PCs.
The worst thing about Macs are that you automatically turn into a douche.
You can`t talk about Macs, you can`t take a Mac laptop out in public etc. without everyone thinking you are a douche.
You're deviating from the false claims you made previously. Correlate your claims with facts, not just half assed opinions.
You can build a mac. A hackintosh. If you refer to a 'mac' as an AIO aluminum-finished chassis, then most likely no.
You can use a two button mouse. (It's two finger click on a touchpad)
I did. He did. These guys did.
It is overpriced and it is nice to buy your own hardware, but don't go around saying the OS is like shaving with a bowling ball when it manages to make something as powerful as Linux into something easy to use. Don't get me wrong, it has it's fair share of problems, but at least find them out before you start pulling criticisms out of your arse.
/thread.
fix'd
Get rolled Pig. /thread (2)
So what justifies paying twice the price for a 1GB RAM, 120GB Mini?
Furthermore, why are you in a thread that's made to criticize the Mac?
Furthermore, why are all Macfags such defensive assholes? Can't you accept a little criticism?
